What Is a Sprinkler Wire and Irrigation Cable?
Sprinkler and irrigation control wire carries low-voltage (typically 24VAC) signals from an irrigation controller to solenoid valves that open and close each watering zone. It is rated UF (Underground Feeder) for direct burial without conduit, with a solid or stranded copper conductor and a PE or PVC jacket resistant to moisture, soil chemicals and burial abrasion over decades of service.
Wire gauge and conductor count are sized to the number of valve zones and the total run distance — smaller gauge wire has higher resistance, which can cause voltage drop severe enough to prevent distant valves from actuating reliably on long runs. Multi-conductor cables bundle a common wire plus one dedicated wire per zone, reducing trenching compared to running individual pairs to each valve.

Can I use regular wire instead of UF-rated irrigation wire?
