The magnet base must maintain full holding force throughout the cut — most mag drills include a safety interlock that prevents spindle operation unless the magnet is confirmed engaged, and many add a mechanical safety chain or strap for overhead or vertical mounting as backup against power loss.

Mag drills are commonly paired with annular (core) cutters rather than twist bits for larger-diameter holes, since annular cutters remove only a ring of material rather than the full disc, requiring much less torque and power for a given hole diameter — a mag drill's motor rating and annular cutter capacity (commonly 1in-2in+ diameter) should be matched together, and twist-drill capacity is typically smaller than annular capacity on the same machine. What's the advantage of an annular cutter over a twist drill on a mag drill?
