What Is a Boiler Gauge?
Boiler gauges provide the direct visual indication required by code and safe operating practice to monitor a boiler's internal pressure, temperature and water level. A steam pressure gauge, typically a Bourdon-tube mechanical gauge, must be sized with a range roughly double the boiler's normal operating pressure so the needle reads in the more accurate middle portion of the dial rather than pegged near either end. A water level gauge glass is a transparent tube or flat glass assembly mounted directly to the boiler shell through shutoff valves, giving operators a direct, unambiguous view of the actual water level — a critical safety indicator since a low water condition is one of the most dangerous boiler failure modes.
Tridicators combine pressure and temperature indication (and sometimes altitude/head for hydronic systems) into a single dial gauge, common on smaller commercial and hydronic boiler systems where a single combined readout is more practical than separate instruments. Gauge glass sets include isolation valves and often a drain valve, allowing the glass to be blown down periodically to clear sediment and verify it's reading the true water level rather than a false level caused by a clogged connection.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure Range | Sized to roughly 2x normal operating pressure | Keeps normal operating pressure reading mid-dial for best accuracy and needle visibility |
| Gauge Glass Length | Matched to boiler's gauge glass fitting spacing | Must match the specific boiler's mounting centers exactly for proper installation |
| Connection Size | Common NPT sizes, e.g. 1/4", 1/2" | Must match the boiler's tapped gauge connection port |
| Temperature Rating | Bourdon tube and glass rated for steam temperature | Gauge internals must withstand sustained contact with high-temperature steam or hot water |
| Code Compliance | ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements | Most jurisdictions require code-compliant gauges as a condition of boiler operation and inspection |

FAQ
Boiler Gauges Questions, Answered
Why should a pressure gauge's range be about double the normal operating pressure?
Bourdon-tube pressure gauges read most accurately in the middle third of their dial range, and the needle mechanism experiences the least wear when it isn't consistently pegged near the very top of its travel. Sizing the gauge range to roughly twice the normal operating pressure keeps the needle comfortably in that accurate mid-range zone during normal operation while still leaving headroom to register pressure excursions above normal.
What is a water level gauge glass and why is it critical for boiler safety?
A water level gauge glass is a transparent tube or flat glass panel connected directly to the boiler shell at the top and bottom, giving operators a direct visual line on the actual water level inside the boiler — not an inferred or electronically sensed reading. Low water level is one of the most dangerous conditions a boiler can experience, since exposed heating surfaces can overheat and fail catastrophically, which is why a direct visual gauge glass is a standard code requirement rather than relying solely on electronic level sensors.
What is a tridicator and when is it used instead of separate gauges?
A tridicator is a single combination gauge displaying pressure, temperature, and often altitude (system head) on one dial, commonly used on smaller commercial and residential hydronic hot water boiler systems where a compact, single-instrument readout is more practical than mounting three separate gauges. Larger industrial steam boiler systems typically still use separate dedicated pressure and temperature instruments for more precise individual readings.
How often should a boiler's gauge glass be blown down?
Gauge glass blow-down frequency depends on water quality and boiler duty cycle, but many operations perform it on a daily or per-shift schedule as standard practice, since sediment or scale buildup in the gauge glass connections can cause the glass to show a false water level that doesn't match the boiler's actual contents. Regular blow-down also helps verify the glass and its connecting valves aren't clogged or malfunctioning.
Are boiler gauges required by code, and does that affect what I can install?
Yes — boilers operating under jurisdictional inspection are generally required to have code-compliant pressure gauges and water level indication per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and applicable state/local boiler codes, and an inspector may reject a boiler for service if gauges are missing, damaged, or clearly out of proper range for the system. Always confirm a replacement gauge matches the pressure range, connection size and any certification markings required for your specific boiler's jurisdiction.
