What Is a Process Calibrator Accessorie?
A process calibrator itself only sources or measures a small set of native signal types (mA, mV, resistance, or a specific thermocouple/RTD input); accessories are what extend it to the actual field connection — a mini thermocouple plug adapter, an RTD 3-wire clip set, or a pressure module that converts a hydraulic or pneumatic input into an electrical signal the calibrator's base unit can read. Choosing the wrong adapter (for example, a standard thermocouple mini-plug where the field device uses a micro connector) means the calibrator simply won't make electrical contact, not that it will read incorrectly.
Pressure modules are calibrator-brand-specific in most cases — the module contains its own pressure sensor and communicates its identity and range to the base calibrator electronically, so a module built for one manufacturer's calibrator generally will not work on a different brand's base unit even if the physical port looks similar. Traceable calibration certificates for the accessory (particularly pressure modules and precision resistors) matter in regulated industries, since an out-of-cert accessory can invalidate the calibration record even if the base calibrator itself is in current calibration.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connector Type | Banana plug, alligator clip, mini thermocouple plug | Must physically match the field device terminal — no adapter compensates for a wrong connector |
| Signal Type | mA loop, mV, resistance/RTD, thermocouple (J/K/T/etc.) | Accessory must support the exact signal type and thermocouple grade being tested |
| Calibrator Compatibility | Brand/model-specific for pressure modules | Pressure modules are typically not cross-compatible between calibrator manufacturers |
| Pressure Range | Module-specific range, e.g. 0-30 psi, 0-300 psi, 0-3000 psi | Range should bracket the transmitter's calibration points with margin, not be oversized |
| Calibration Traceability | NIST-traceable certificate for the accessory itself | Required in regulated/audited environments — an uncertified accessory can invalidate the test record |

FAQ
Process Calibrator Accessories Questions, Answered
Why won't my thermocouple adapter connect to the field device?
Thermocouple connectors come in standard and miniature sizes, and within each size the pin shape is keyed by thermocouple type (J, K, T, etc.) so mismatched types physically won't seat correctly even if the plug looks similar. Confirm both the connector size (standard vs. mini) and the thermocouple type before ordering an adapter.
Can I use a pressure module from a different calibrator brand?
Generally no — pressure modules typically contain their own sensor and communicate range and identity data electronically to the base calibrator, and that communication protocol is usually proprietary to the calibrator manufacturer. Even if the physical connector appears to fit, cross-brand modules commonly aren't recognized or won't read correctly.
How do I choose the right pressure range for a module?
Select a module range that comfortably brackets the transmitter's actual calibration test points with reasonable margin, rather than the largest range available — an oversized range reduces resolution and accuracy at the lower end of your test points, similar to using an oversized pressure gauge for a low-pressure reading.
Do calibrator accessories need their own calibration certificate?
In regulated or audited environments, yes — accessories with their own measurement function (particularly pressure modules and precision resistors) need current traceable calibration certificates, since an out-of-cert accessory can invalidate the calibration record even when the base calibrator unit itself is properly certified. Check your quality program's specific requirement for accessory-level traceability.
What's the difference between alligator clips and banana plug test leads?
Alligator clips are spring-loaded jaws that clamp onto a wire, terminal or bare lead, useful for quick temporary connections to terminals without a matching plug. Banana plug leads terminate in a pin design meant for dedicated banana jacks on the calibrator and mating equipment, giving a more secure, lower-resistance connection for repeated or precision measurements.
