What Is a PVC Heater Bender?
A PVC heater bender applies radiant heat evenly around a section of PVC pipe or conduit until the material softens enough to be hand-formed into a bend, then holds its shape as it cools — an alternative to factory pre-formed elbows where a non-standard angle, offset, or saddle bend is needed in the field. Uneven heating is the main failure mode: heating too much on one side before the opposite side softens causes the pipe wall to kink or collapse rather than bend smoothly.
Heater type is matched to pipe diameter and bending volume: handheld radiant heaters suit occasional field bends on smaller conduit sizes, while hot-box style heaters enclose a longer section of pipe for more even heating on larger diameters or higher-volume shop bending. Some bender designs include an internal spring or bend former to support the pipe's inside wall during the bend, preventing wall collapse on the compression side of the curve.

Why does my PVC pipe kink instead of bending smoothly?
Kinking almost always means the pipe was heated unevenly — one side softened enough to bend before the opposite side reached working temperature, so the softer side collapses inward under the bending force instead of the whole cross-section deforming together. Rotating the pipe steadily during heating and allowing enough time for even heat penetration around the full circumference prevents this.
What size heater do I need for large diameter conduit?
Larger diameter pipe needs a heater with enough wattage and coverage length to heat the full circumference evenly within a reasonable time — hot-box style heaters that enclose a longer pipe section are generally better suited to large diameters (3 in and up) than handheld radiant heaters designed for smaller conduit.
Do I need an internal bend support to bend PVC pipe?
For larger or thinner-wall pipe, an internal spring or mandrel inserted into the pipe before heating helps support the inside wall and prevents it from collapsing on the compression side of the bend. Smaller diameter, thicker-wall conduit can often be bent successfully without internal support if heated evenly.
How long does it take to heat PVC pipe for bending?
Heating time depends on pipe diameter, wall thickness and heater wattage, ranging from under a minute for small conduit on a high-wattage heater to several minutes for larger diameter pipe — the pipe is ready to bend when it becomes uniformly pliable around its full circumference, not just soft on the surface.
Can these heaters be used on CPVC or only standard PVC?
Most PVC heater benders are designed and rated for standard PVC; CPVC has a different heat-deflection temperature and can require different heating parameters, so check the heater manufacturer's guidance before using it on CPVC to avoid under- or over-heating the material.
