What Is a Portable Diaphragm Pump?
A diaphragm pump moves fluid using two flexible diaphragms that alternately flex back and forth, drawing fluid in on one stroke and pushing it out on the other, with check valves controlling flow direction. Air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps use compressed air rather than an electric motor, making them intrinsically safer around flammable fluids and self-priming even with a dry inlet line, unlike centrifugal pumps.
Diaphragm and wetted-part material selection is the critical compatibility decision: PTFE diaphragms handle the widest range of aggressive chemicals but are stiffer and less flexible than rubber compounds like Buna-N or Santoprene, which flex more efficiently for water and mild fluids but degrade quickly in contact with solvents or acids. Flow rate and maximum solid-particle size the pump can pass (since diaphragm pumps can handle some suspended solids) should match the actual application, not just the connection size.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Flow Rate | GPM/LPM at rated air pressure or voltage | Must match the transfer volume and time requirements of the job |
| Diaphragm Material | PTFE, Buna-N, Santoprene, EPDM | Chemical compatibility with the transferred fluid is the primary selection factor |
| Power Source | Compressed air (AODD), electric motor, battery | AODD pumps are self-priming and safer for flammable fluids; electric pumps need no air supply |
| Connection Size | NPT/BSP inlet and outlet sizes | Must match hose or piping connections at the transfer points |
| Solids Handling | Maximum particle size passable through the pump | Determines whether the pump can handle slurries or must be limited to clean fluids |

FAQ
Portable Diaphragm Pumps Questions, Answered
What's the advantage of an air-operated diaphragm pump over an electric pump?
AODD pumps are intrinsically safer around flammable vapors since there's no electric motor or sparking components, they're self-priming and can run dry without damage, and they naturally stall against a closed valve rather than building dangerous pressure — trade-offs are the need for a compressed air supply and generally lower precision flow control.
How do I choose the right diaphragm material?
Match diaphragm material to the fluid's chemical compatibility first: PTFE handles the broadest range of aggressive chemicals and solvents but is stiffer, while Buna-N, Santoprene or EPDM flex more efficiently for water, mild chemicals or food-grade applications but will degrade quickly if used with an incompatible chemical.
Can a diaphragm pump handle fluids with solids or slurry?
Yes, within limits — diaphragm pumps can pass some suspended solids since the check valve design tolerates particles better than a tight-clearance centrifugal pump, but each pump has a maximum passable particle size that should be checked against your fluid's actual solids content.
Do diaphragm pumps need to be primed before use?
No — a properly functioning AODD pump is self-priming and can draw fluid up from a dry inlet line, which is one of its key advantages over centrifugal pumps that require the pump casing to be filled with fluid before starting.
What air supply does an AODD pump need?
Requirements vary by pump size, but check the manufacturer's specified air consumption (CFM) and pressure (PSI) rating against your available compressed air supply — undersized air supply reduces flow rate and can cause the pump to stall under load.
