What Is a Air Cock?
An air cock is a small, quarter-turn shutoff valve typically used on compressed air and low-pressure gas lines to isolate an instrument, bleed trapped pressure, or drain condensate from a low point in the line. The design is simpler than a full ball or globe valve — usually a tapered plug or small ball rotating in a compact brass or bronze body — sized for nominal port diameters from about 1/8 inch up to 1/2 inch, well below typical process valve sizing.
Air cocks are commonly found upstream of pressure gauges (to allow gauge isolation or replacement without depressurizing the whole line), at low points in air receiver tanks and distribution piping (for manual condensate draining), and on test and calibration equipment where a quick, tactile on/off is preferred over a multi-turn valve. Handle style — lever, T-handle, or knurled knob — is chosen mainly for the access and torque available at the installation point.

What's the difference between an air cock and a ball valve?
Both provide quarter-turn shutoff, but air cocks are purpose-built at smaller nominal sizes (typically 1/8" to 1/2") for instrument isolation, gauge connections, and drain points, with a simpler, more compact body than a general-purpose ball valve. A ball valve is more often specified for main line shutoff at larger sizes.
What port size do I need for a pressure gauge isolation cock?
Match the cock's port thread to the gauge's connection thread, most commonly 1/4" NPT for standard 2-2.5" dial gauges, though smaller panel gauges may use 1/8" NPT. Confirm the gauge's stem thread before ordering, since gauge connection sizes vary by dial size and manufacturer.
Can I use a brass air cock on an oil-lubricated compressed air line?
Yes — brass is standard for general compressed air service, including lightly oil-lubricated lines. For lines carrying process gases or requiring corrosion resistance beyond what brass offers, a stainless steel body is the usual upgrade.
How do I drain condensate from an air receiver tank using an air cock?
A drain cock is mounted at the lowest point of the tank; opening it manually releases accumulated condensate along with a brief burst of air. Because this requires manual attention, many shops eventually replace a manual drain cock with an automatic condensate drain, but a manual air cock remains common on smaller tanks and as a backup.
What pressure rating should I check before ordering?
Standard brass air cocks are typically rated in the 150-300 PSI range, which comfortably covers most shop compressed air systems (90-125 PSI), but always confirm the stated rating against your system's actual operating pressure, particularly on receiver tanks that may see higher intermittent pressure.
