What Is a Exhaust Rain Cap?
An exhaust rain cap fits over the open end of a vertical exhaust stack to prevent rain, snow and debris from entering the exhaust system and reaching the engine or generator, while still allowing exhaust gas to escape freely. A flapper-style cap uses a hinged, weighted flap that's pushed open by exhaust flow and gravity-closes when the engine is off, giving the best rain protection during shutdown. A fixed louvered cap has no moving parts and relies on angled louvers to deflect rain while venting continuously.
Sizing is based on the stack's actual outside diameter, and the cap must not meaningfully restrict exhaust flow — an undersized or poorly designed cap creates backpressure that reduces engine performance and can shorten exhaust system life. Material selection depends on exhaust temperature and environment: stainless steel handles higher sustained temperatures and resists corrosion better than chrome-plated steel, which is more common on lower-temperature or decorative applications.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Diameter | Sized to actual exhaust pipe OD | An improperly sized cap won't seat correctly or will restrict flow |
| Cap Mechanism | Flapper (self-closing), fixed louvered, swivel | Flapper caps give the best rain seal when the engine is off; fixed caps vent continuously |
| Material | Stainless steel, chrome-plated steel, aluminized steel | Stainless withstands higher sustained temperatures and resists corrosion best |
| Temperature Rating | Continuous exhaust gas temperature limit | Exceeding the rated temperature can warp or discolor the cap over time |
| Mounting Style | Slip-fit, clamp-on, weld-on | Must match the stack's termination and how the cap will be serviced/removed |

FAQ
Exhaust Rain Caps Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a flapper cap and a fixed louvered cap?
A flapper cap has a hinged, often spring- or weight-assisted flap that opens under exhaust pressure when the engine runs and closes by gravity when it stops, giving the best protection against rain entering a stationary stack. A fixed louvered cap has no moving parts and vents continuously through angled louvers, offering less complete rain protection but no mechanical parts to maintain.
How do I size an exhaust rain cap?
Measure the actual outside diameter of the exhaust stack at the point the cap will mount — caps are sized to slip over or clamp onto a specific OD range, and an incorrectly sized cap either won't seat securely or will restrict exhaust flow.
Does an exhaust rain cap restrict engine performance?
A properly sized cap designed for adequate flow area shouldn't create meaningful backpressure, but an undersized or poorly designed cap can restrict flow enough to affect engine performance and increase exhaust system wear — choose a cap rated for your stack diameter and engine's exhaust flow.
Should I choose stainless steel or chrome for my rain cap?
Stainless steel handles higher sustained exhaust temperatures and resists corrosion better over time, making it the better choice for diesel generators and heavy-duty equipment. Chrome-plated steel is more common on lower-temperature or decorative applications like some truck stacks.
Do flapper-style rain caps need maintenance?
Yes — the hinge mechanism can accumulate soot and corrosion over time, which can cause the flap to stick open or closed; periodic inspection and cleaning helps ensure the flap continues to operate freely.
