What Is a Pilot Point Drill Bit?

A pilot point (or split point) drill bit is ground with a small centered point and secondary cutting edges at the tip, unlike a standard twist drill's flat or slightly conical chisel edge, which tends to skate across the surface before it bites. The pilot point centers itself on contact and begins cutting immediately, which is why these bits are the standard choice for drilling sheet metal, tubing and curved or angled surfaces where a standard bit would walk off the intended mark without a center punch.

Material and coating are matched to the workpiece: high-speed steel (HSS) bits handle general-purpose wood, plastic and mild steel; cobalt (M35/M42) bits resist the heat generated drilling stainless steel and other high-strength alloys without losing hardness; and titanium nitride (TiN) or black oxide coatings on an HSS base extend tool life and reduce friction in mild steel and aluminum without the added cost of solid cobalt.

Pilot Point Drill Bits Questions, Answered

Why won't a standard twist drill start where I want it on sheet metal?

A standard twist drill's chisel edge at the tip doesn't cut cleanly at zero speed — it tends to skate or 'walk' across a smooth or curved surface before it engages, especially without a center punch mark to register in. A pilot point bit's split-point geometry engages and centers immediately on contact, eliminating that walk without needing to punch a starting dimple first.

Do I still need a center punch if I'm using a pilot point bit?

Generally no for flat or moderately curved surfaces — that's the main advantage of the pilot point design. However, a center punch is still good practice on very hard materials, highly polished surfaces, or where extreme location accuracy is critical, since it gives an extra positive registration point.

When should I choose cobalt over HSS pilot point bits?

Cobalt (M35 or M42) bits retain their hardness at the higher temperatures generated when drilling stainless steel, high-strength alloys or work-hardened material, where a standard HSS bit would soften, dull quickly or burn. For mild steel, aluminum, wood and plastic, standard HSS or a coated HSS bit is usually sufficient and more cost-effective.

What does the coating on a pilot point bit actually do?

Titanium nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction between the bit and the chip, which lowers heat buildup and extends tool life, particularly useful in mild steel and aluminum. Black oxide coating primarily adds corrosion resistance and some lubricity but less heat resistance than TiN. Coatings wear off with use and re-sharpening, at which point the bit performs as its base material.

What's the difference between a 118° and 135° point angle?

A 118° point angle is the traditional general-purpose angle, historically standard for HSS bits in wood, plastic and mild steel. A 135° angle — common on most modern pilot point bits — presents a flatter cutting profile that's better suited to harder materials and further reduces walking, which is part of why 135° split point is the near-universal standard on pilot point bits today.
