What Is a Round Spacer?
A round spacer is a cylindrical component placed over or between fasteners to maintain a precise, fixed gap between two mounted parts — commonly a PCB and an enclosure, or two panels in a mechanical assembly. Unthreaded spacers act as simple bushings that a bolt passes through, while threaded standoffs have internal female or male threads on one or both ends, allowing them to be fastened directly without a separate screw passing all the way through.
Selection depends on bore diameter matching the fastener, outside diameter clearing the mounting hole or surrounding components, and length setting the exact standoff distance required for clearance (such as component height on a PCB or ventilation gap on an enclosure). Material affects both mechanical strength and, in electronics applications, electrical isolation — nylon spacers provide insulation where metal spacers would create an unwanted electrical path.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bore Diameter | Sized to the fastener's shank/thread diameter | Must match the screw or bolt passing through for proper fit and load transfer |
| Outside Diameter | Sized to clear surrounding components or holes | Determines footprint and clearance around adjacent hardware |
| Length | Sets the exact gap distance between mounted surfaces | Must match required clearance for components, airflow or mechanical function |
| Thread Configuration | Unthreaded (bushing), female-female, male-female threaded | Determines whether a through-bolt or standalone fastening is used |
| Material | Aluminum, nylon, stainless steel, brass | Nylon provides electrical isolation; metal spacers offer higher strength |

FAQ
Round Spacers Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a spacer and a standoff?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but 'spacer' more commonly refers to an unthreaded bushing that a bolt passes through, while 'standoff' typically has integral threads (male, female, or both) allowing it to be fastened directly — check the specific product's thread configuration rather than relying on the name alone.
Why use nylon spacers instead of metal in electronics assemblies?
Nylon spacers provide electrical isolation between a PCB and a metal enclosure or between two conductive components, preventing unintended electrical paths or short circuits — metal spacers are used where isolation isn't a concern and higher mechanical strength is needed.
How do I choose the right bore diameter?
Match the bore diameter to the fastener's shank or thread diameter with enough clearance for the screw to pass through freely without binding — an undersized bore won't accept the fastener, while an oversized bore allows excess play in the assembly.
Can round spacers handle structural loads?
Metal spacers (aluminum, stainless steel, brass) can handle moderate structural and compressive loads, but for genuinely load-bearing structural standoffs, verify the manufacturer's rated compressive strength — spacers are primarily designed to maintain gap distance, not serve as the primary structural support.
What length spacer do I need?
Length should equal the exact gap distance required by your application, such as clearance for tall components on a PCB or a specific ventilation gap in an enclosure — measure the actual required standoff distance rather than estimating.
