What Is a Mobile Storage Cabinet?
A mobile storage cabinet is a fully enclosed steel or heavy-duty polymer cabinet mounted on swivel or fixed casters, allowing it to be relocated around a shop, warehouse or job site while keeping tools, parts and consumables secured and dust-free. Unlike open shelving on a cart, an enclosed cabinet with lockable doors protects contents from pilferage and environmental exposure while remaining mobile — a common alternative to fixed storage where floor layout or work location changes frequently.

How is shelf load capacity different from overall cabinet capacity?
Shelf load capacity is rated per individual shelf, based on the gauge of steel and the shelf's support structure, and it does not simply multiply by the number of shelves to get a cabinet total — each shelf must independently stay within its rated limit regardless of how many shelves the cabinet has. Always check the per-shelf rating against your heaviest planned item, not an average across all shelves.
What's the difference between hinged, sliding and roll-up cabinet doors?
Hinged doors swing open on a pivot and generally seal best against dust, but need clearance space to open fully, which matters in tight aisles. Sliding doors move sideways on a track, saving floor space but only exposing half the cabinet's width at a time. Roll-up doors coil up and out of the way, giving full-width access to the entire cabinet interior while needing minimal clearance when open — a common choice for narrow aisles or tight production cells.
Can mobile storage cabinets support heavy equipment on top?
Some heavy-duty cabinets are rated for a top-surface work load in addition to internal shelf capacity, effectively doubling as a mobile workbench, but this must be explicitly rated by the manufacturer — not all cabinets are designed to bear weight on the top surface. Check the top-load rating separately from the shelf load rating before using the cabinet top as a work surface.
What locking options are available on mobile storage cabinets?
Common options include a built-in keyed cam lock on each door, a padlock hasp for adding your own padlock, and keyless mechanical or electronic entry systems on higher-security cabinets. Do mobile storage cabinets require floor anchoring for safety?
By design, mobile cabinets are meant to roll freely rather than be anchored, but many models include locking casters that should be engaged whenever the cabinet is stationary to prevent unintended movement, particularly when loaded near or at maximum capacity, or when drawers/doors extending the cabinet's footprint could create a tip risk on an uneven floor.
