What Is a Open End Wrench Set?

An open-end wrench engages two flats of a hex or square fastener from the side, which lets it slide onto a bolt or nut where a boxed-end or socket wrench can't fit over the end — the tradeoff is less surface contact, making it more prone to rounding a fastener under high torque compared to a box-end or 12-point wrench. Jaw opening angle (typically 15 degrees) allows the wrench to be flipped and re-engaged in tight-swing spaces, useful when full rotation clearance isn't available.

Set range should be chosen against the actual fastener sizes encountered in the intended work — an automotive-focused set differs from a plumbing or heavy-equipment set — and material (chrome vanadium being the common commercial-grade standard) affects durability under repeated torque cycling. SAE (fractional inch) and metric sizes are not directly interchangeable despite occasional close nominal fits (e.g., 9/16 in. and 14mm), and using a near-fit size risks rounding the fastener.

When should I use an open-end wrench instead of a box-end or socket?

Open-end wrenches are the right choice where a fastener can't be accessed from the end — for example, on a bolt threaded through a bracket with a nut close to an obstruction, or on a fitting where a hose or line blocks socket access. Box-end and socket wrenches grip more of the fastener's flats and are less likely to round it off, so they're generally preferred whenever there's enough clearance to use them.

Can I substitute a close metric size for an SAE size, or vice versa?

It's not recommended, even for close nominal matches like 9/16 in. and 14mm — the actual dimensional difference, while small, is enough that a near-fit wrench sits slightly loose on the fastener flats, increasing the chance of rounding the corners under torque, especially on a tight or corroded fastener. Always match the wrench to the fastener's actual standard.

Why are open-end wrench jaws angled instead of straight?

The typical 15-degree jaw angle lets you flip the wrench over after each partial turn and re-engage the fastener, effectively working around obstructions in tight spaces where you don't have room to fully rotate the wrench through a complete swing before needing to reposition it.

What size range should my set cover?

Cheaper wrenches made from softer steel are more prone to jaw spread (widening) over time, which increases play on the fastener and accelerates rounding.
