What Is a Cam and Groove Gasket?
Cam and groove (cam lock) couplings seal via a rubber or elastomeric gasket seated in the female coupler that compresses against the male adapter's face when the arms are locked down, and this gasket — not the metal or plastic coupling body — is the actual sealing element responsible for preventing leakage. Because the gasket is a wear item replaced far more often than the coupling itself, chemical compatibility with the transferred fluid is the primary selection criterion, followed by temperature range and, in food or pharmaceutical applications, regulatory compliance (such as FDA or 3-A sanitary approval).
Buna-N (nitrile) is the most common general-purpose gasket material, handling petroleum products, oils, and many general fluids economically; EPDM resists a wide range of chemicals, acids, and is a common choice for water and many aggressive fluids but degrades with petroleum products; PTFE offers the broadest chemical resistance of common gasket materials for aggressive chemical transfer but is stiffer and less compliant than elastomers; silicone is used where food-grade or high/low temperature flexibility is needed; and Viton (FKM) is specified for fuel and solvent resistance combined with high temperature capability.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gasket Material | Buna-N, EPDM, PTFE, silicone, Viton (FKM) | Chemical compatibility with the transferred fluid is the primary selection driver — materials are not interchangeable |
| Coupling Size | 1/2 in. through 6 in. and larger, matched to cam lock coupling nominal size | Gasket must match the specific coupling size exactly to seat and seal correctly |
| Temperature Range | Material-dependent operating temperature limits | Exceeding a gasket material's rated temperature range risks hardening, cracking, or loss of seal |
| Chemical Resistance | Petroleum (Buna-N), broad chemical (EPDM), aggressive chemical (PTFE), fuel/solvent (Viton) | Using an incompatible gasket material leads to swelling, degradation, and eventual seal failure/leakage |
| Regulatory Compliance | FDA-compliant, 3-A sanitary options for food/beverage service | Required for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical transfer applications per industry regulation |

FAQ
Cam and Groove Gaskets Questions, Answered
How do I choose the right gasket material for my application?
Match the gasket material to the specific fluid being transferred, checking a chemical compatibility chart for the fluid, its concentration, and operating temperature. Buna-N suits general petroleum and oil transfer; EPDM suits water and many chemicals but not petroleum; PTFE handles the broadest range of aggressive chemicals; Viton handles fuels and solvents at higher temperatures; silicone suits food-grade and temperature-extreme applications.
Can I substitute EPDM for Buna-N or vice versa?
Not for petroleum products — EPDM degrades and swells when exposed to petroleum-based oils and fuels, while Buna-N (nitrile) is specifically formulated for petroleum resistance. Conversely, EPDM often handles a broader range of water-based chemicals and weathering better than Buna-N. The two are not generally interchangeable; selection should follow the fluid being transferred.
What gasket material is required for food-grade transfer applications?
Food and beverage transfer typically requires an FDA-compliant gasket material, commonly silicone or a food-grade EPDM formulation, and in some sanitary applications a 3-A sanitary standard compliance. Confirm the specific regulatory requirement for your application and verify the gasket is certified accordingly, not just generically labeled 'food grade.'
How often should cam lock gaskets be replaced?
Cam lock gaskets are wear and consumable items that should be inspected regularly for cracking, flattening, or chemical degradation, and replaced proactively rather than waiting for a visible leak, since gasket failure during fluid transfer can result in spillage of the transferred material. Replacement frequency depends on cycle count, chemical exposure severity, and material choice.
Will the wrong gasket size still seal if it's close to the coupling size?
No — cam lock gaskets are sized to seat precisely within the female coupler's groove against the male adapter face, and an incorrectly sized gasket (even if it appears to fit loosely) will not compress and seal correctly, risking a leak under pressure. Always match the gasket to the coupling's exact nominal size.
