What Is a Piano Hinge?

A piano hinge, also called a continuous hinge, is a single hinge that runs the full length of a door, lid or panel rather than being installed as two or three separate discrete hinges. Because the load is distributed evenly along the entire length instead of concentrated at a few mounting points, piano hinges resist warping and racking on long, narrow doors or lids — the original application was upright piano keyboard lids, giving the style its name.

Piano hinges are sold as stock lengths (commonly 6", 12", 36", 48", 72" and longer) that can be cut to a required length with a hacksaw or shear, since the knuckle and pin construction is continuous and uniform along the strip. Open width (the total width of both leaves when fully open) and pin style — fixed or removable — determine mounting footprint and whether the hinge can be disassembled for panel removal without unscrewing both leaves.

Applications

Where Piano Hinges Get Used

Piano hinges are specified anywhere a long, narrow door or lid needs full-length support instead of point-loaded discrete hinges.

Electrical & Industrial Enclosures

Stainless piano hinges specified on NEMA-rated cabinet doors for even load distribution and corrosion resistance.

Cabinetry & Millwork

Aluminum or steel piano hinges used on long cabinet doors and toy boxes where standard butt hinges would rack over time.

Truck Bodies & Trailers

Heavy duty steel piano hinges used on tool box lids and side panel doors subject to vibration and repeated cycling.

Marine Applications

Stainless steel piano hinges specified for hatch and locker lids exposed to saltwater spray.

Machine Guarding

Continuous hinges used on long access panels for machine enclosures, distributing load evenly across the panel edge.

Musical Instrument & Case Manufacturing

The original application — keyboard and case lids needing full-length, warp-resistant support.

FAQ

Piano Hinges Questions, Answered

How do I cut a piano hinge to a custom length?

Most piano hinges can be cut to length with a hacksaw, angle grinder, or metal shear, cutting straight through a knuckle joint so both leaves stay aligned — mark the cut line on both leaves before cutting to keep it square. After cutting, deburr the cut edge and re-drill mounting holes as needed since stock length hinges are pre-punched only at standard spacing.

What's the advantage of a piano hinge over separate butt hinges on a long door?

A piano hinge distributes the door's weight and any racking force evenly along its entire length, while two or three separate butt hinges concentrate stress at only those mounting points, which can cause the door to warp, sag or bind over time — especially on lightweight or long, narrow panels like enclosure doors and lids.

What does 'open width' mean when selecting a piano hinge?

Open width is the combined width of both hinge leaves measured across the hinge when fully opened flat — for example, a hinge listed as 1-1/2" open width has two 3/4" leaves. This determines how much mounting surface is needed on each side of the hinge pin and how far the screw holes sit from the pin line.

Should I choose a fixed pin or removable pin piano hinge?

A fixed pin hinge is permanently assembled and cannot be separated without cutting the knuckle, which is fine for doors that never need full removal. A removable pin hinge lets the two leaves separate by sliding the pin out, useful when a door or panel needs to be periodically lifted off entirely for service without unscrewing every mounting screw.

Why choose stainless steel over standard steel for a piano hinge?

Stainless steel (typically 304 grade) resists corrosion in washdown, outdoor, or high-humidity environments where plain steel would rust, making it the standard choice for enclosures, marine hardware, and food-processing equipment. Standard steel is lower cost and adequate for indoor, dry-environment applications like cabinetry.
