What Is a Rope Grab?
A rope grab is a fall-arrest device that attaches to a vertical lifeline and travels freely along the rope as the worker moves, but engages a cam or wedge mechanism to lock instantly onto the rope the moment a fall load is applied. Manual rope grabs must be manually repositioned by hand as the worker climbs or descends; mobile (self-tending) rope grabs follow the worker automatically, moving freely in one direction and locking in the fall direction without the user having to touch the device.
Every rope grab is sized to a specific rope diameter and rope construction — a device built for 5/8-inch lifeline will not engage reliably on 1/2-inch rope, since the cam geometry depends on the rope's exact diameter for a positive grip. Devices are tested and certified to ANSI Z359.1 or OSHA 1926.502 fall-arrest requirements, and many pair with an integral energy-absorbing shock pack that limits arrest forces on the worker's body to within the rated threshold.

What's the difference between a manual and a mobile rope grab?
A manual rope grab must be moved by hand each time the worker changes position on the rope, and it locks onto the rope only when the user releases a lever or twists the device to disengage the cam. A mobile (self-tending) rope grab follows the worker automatically as they climb or descend, sliding freely in the direction of travel and locking instantly if a fall occurs, without the worker needing to touch it — mobile grabs are preferred for continuous vertical travel like tower climbing.
Can I use a rope grab on any rope diameter?
No. Rope grabs are manufactured and certified for a specific rope diameter — commonly 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, or 3/4 inch — because the internal cam or wedge geometry needs a close match to the rope's actual diameter to achieve a positive, reliable lock. Using a grab on the wrong diameter rope can prevent it from locking at all or cause it to slip under fall load.
Do rope grabs need a separate shock-absorbing lanyard?
It depends on the model. Some rope grabs have an integral shock pack built into the connecting strap that absorbs fall energy and limits arrest force; others are designed to be used with a separate energy-absorbing lanyard between the grab and the worker's harness. Check the manufacturer's instructions — combining a shock-absorbing grab with an additional external shock absorber can sometimes exceed the rated free-fall distance.
What standards should a rope grab meet for fall-arrest work?

How do I know if a rope grab is compatible with my vertical lifeline?
Match the rope grab's rated rope diameter and rope construction (twisted vs. braided, material) exactly to the lifeline you're using, and check that the combined system is certified together — many manufacturers only certify a rope grab as part of a specific lifeline kit. Never substitute a rope grab from one manufacturer onto a different brand's lifeline rope without verifying compatibility, since cam engagement varies with rope surface texture and diameter tolerance.
