What Is a Diamond and CBN Grinding Wheel?

Diamond and CBN wheels are superabrasive grinding wheels that use industrial diamond or cubic boron nitride particles bonded to a wheel body, chosen over conventional aluminum oxide or silicon carbide wheels when grinding materials too hard for conventional abrasives to cut efficiently. Diamond wheels are the correct choice for carbide, ceramics, glass and other very hard, non-ferrous or non-metallic materials; CBN is used specifically on hardened ferrous materials (hardened tool steel, high-speed steel) because diamond reacts chemically with iron at grinding temperatures and wears rapidly on ferrous workpieces, while CBN does not.

Bond type determines how the abrasive is held and how the wheel wears: resin bond wheels wear faster, self-sharpening as worn abrasive releases to expose fresh grit, giving good finish and lower grinding forces, suited to tool and cutter grinding; vitrified bond wheels hold grit longer and cut more aggressively for stock removal, with a more rigid, porous structure; metal bond wheels are the most durable and heat-resistant, used for high-stock-removal and cut-off applications. Grit size is selected on the same fine-to-coarse logic as conventional abrasives — coarser grit for faster stock removal, finer grit for surface finish.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Abrasive TypeDiamond vs. CBNDiamond for carbide/ceramic/glass; CBN specifically for hardened ferrous steel (diamond degrades on iron)
Bond TypeResin, vitrified, metalResin self-sharpens for fine finish; vitrified balances stock removal and finish; metal bond is most durable for heavy removal
Grit SizeCoarse to fine, per applicationCoarser grit removes stock faster; finer grit produces a smoother surface finish
ConcentrationAmount of abrasive per unit volume of the wheelHigher concentration increases cutting rate and wheel life but adds cost
Wheel Shape/Bond LayerStraight, cup, dish; bond layer thicknessShape matches the grinding operation (surface, cylindrical, tool grinding); bond layer depth affects usable wheel life

Applications

Where Diamond and CBN Grinding Wheels Get Used

Diamond and CBN wheels are specified wherever conventional abrasives wear too quickly against very hard, hardened, or non-ferrous ultra-hard materials.

Carbide Tool & Insert Manufacturing

Diamond wheels grind and sharpen tungsten carbide cutting tools, inserts and dies to precise geometry.

Tool & Cutter Grinding

CBN wheels sharpen and regrind high-speed steel and hardened tool steel cutting tools without the wear diamond would suffer.

Precision Ceramics & Glass Processing

Diamond wheels grind and edge technical ceramics, glass and optical components too hard for conventional abrasives.

Bearing & Hardened Component Manufacturing

CBN wheels grind hardened bearing races and precision steel components to tight tolerance and finish.

PCD & PCBN Tooling Production

Diamond wheels are required to grind polycrystalline diamond and CBN cutting tool inserts themselves.

Automotive Engine Component Grinding

CBN wheels grind hardened camshafts, crankshafts and other precision automotive components.

FAQ

Diamond and CBN Grinding Wheels Questions, Answered

Why can't I use a diamond wheel on hardened steel?

Diamond reacts chemically with iron at the high temperatures generated during grinding, causing the diamond abrasive to degrade and wear rapidly when used on ferrous (iron-containing) materials — this is specifically why CBN was developed as an alternative superabrasive for grinding hardened steel and other ferrous materials, since CBN doesn't have this reaction with iron.

What's the difference between resin, vitrified and metal bond wheels?

Resin bond wheels wear and self-sharpen relatively quickly, continuously exposing fresh abrasive, which gives good surface finish and lower grinding forces — common for tool and cutter grinding. Vitrified bond wheels hold their abrasive longer with a more rigid, porous structure, balancing stock removal rate with finish. Metal bond wheels are the most wear-resistant and heat-tolerant, suited to heavy stock removal and cut-off work where wheel life matters most.

How do I choose the right grit size?

Coarser grit removes material faster but leaves a rougher surface finish; finer grit removes material more slowly but produces a smoother finish. Roughing operations typically use coarser grit, while final finishing passes use progressively finer grit — many shops use a coarser wheel for stock removal and a separate finer wheel for finishing passes on the same part.

What does wheel concentration mean?

Concentration describes how much diamond or CBN abrasive is packed into the wheel's bond layer, expressed on a standardized scale — higher concentration generally increases cutting rate and wheel life but costs more, and the appropriate concentration depends on the specific material and grinding operation, per the wheel manufacturer's recommendation.

Are diamond and CBN wheels interchangeable with conventional abrasive wheels on the same grinder?

Not necessarily — superabrasive wheels often use a different bond layer thickness and core construction than conventional aluminum oxide or silicon carbide wheels, and may require specific wheel guards, mounting flanges, or grinder speeds. Confirm the wheel's mounting specification and your grinder's compatibility before switching from a conventional to a superabrasive wheel.
