Glass and ceramic materials fail by brittle fracture rather than plastic deformation, so a standard twist drill's shearing and chip-forming action — which works by yielding metal ahead of the cutting edge — tends to crack or chip these materials instead of cutting them cleanly. Carbide spear point bits solve this with a ground, arrow-shaped tip that scores and abrades a hole through slow, controlled grinding rather than cutting, while diamond bits use embedded diamond grit bonded to the tip or a hollow core to grind through material with minimal lateral stress.

Wet drilling — keeping the bit and workpiece continuously cooled with water — is standard practice for both tip types because dry drilling generates heat that cracks glass and dulls diamond coating prematurely; many diamond core bits used for tile are run with a water-fed drill attachment or a dammed water puddle at the hole location. Why can't I just use a regular twist drill bit on glass or tile?

A standard twist bit is designed to shear and form chips in ductile metal, and that cutting action applies concentrated stress that cracks or shatters brittle materials like glass and ceramic almost immediately. Glass and ceramic bits use a ground carbide spear point or diamond abrasive tip that grinds through the material slowly and with lower lateral stress, which is what allows a clean hole instead of a fractured workpiece.

Do I need to drill glass and tile wet, or can I drill dry?

Wet drilling (keeping the bit and hole location cooled with water) is strongly recommended for both glass and ceramic — dry drilling generates friction heat that causes glass to crack from thermal stress and wears out diamond coating far faster than wet use. Small spot jobs are sometimes done dry with frequent pauses to cool the bit, but continuous or larger-diameter holes should be done wet, either with a water-fed drill or a puddled dam around the hole location.

When should I use a carbide spear point instead of a diamond core bit?

Carbide spear point bits are the economical choice for smaller diameter holes (roughly 1/8 to 1/2 inch) in glass and thinner tile, and they cut faster than diamond for that size range. Diamond core bits become the better choice as hole diameter increases (1 inch and up) or when drilling harder, denser porcelain tile, since a spear point loses efficiency and control at larger diameters.

What drilling speed should I use for glass or ceramic?

Low speed is critical — typically in the 300-750 RPM range — combined with light, steady pressure and no hammer/impact function engaged. Drilling too fast or forcing the bit generates heat and uneven stress that is the most common cause of cracked glass or chipped tile, regardless of how good the bit itself is.

Can these bits also drill through natural stone or granite?

Diamond core and diamond-coated bits used for ceramic and porcelain will also cut natural stone, granite and marble, since diamond abrasion works on any hard, brittle mineral material, but carbide spear point bits are ground specifically for glass and softer ceramic and wear out quickly on dense natural stone. For stone drilling, a diamond bit rated for stone or masonry is the more durable choice.
