Closed-cell foam has individually sealed bubbles that don't interconnect, making it resistant to water absorption and suited to outdoor and weatherstripping applications, while open-cell foam has interconnected pores that absorb moisture and sound but compress more easily — it's chosen for indoor acoustic and light-sealing use rather than weather sealing.

Base polymer determines temperature range and chemical resistance: neoprene foam is the general-purpose default with good weathering and moderate temperature range; EPDM foam offers superior UV and ozone resistance for long-term outdoor exposure; and silicone foam extends usable temperature range well beyond either, making it the choice for gasketing enclosures and equipment exposed to high heat. Compression set is the percentage of a foam's original thickness that doesn't spring back after being compressed for an extended period — a foam with high compression set gradually thins out and loses sealing pressure in an application where it stays clamped continuously, like a permanently bolted enclosure gasket. Foams with lower compression set hold their sealing force longer in these continuous-duty applications, while a higher compression set may be acceptable in a seal that's regularly opened and allowed to recover.

Can I get foam seals custom die-cut to a specific gasket shape?

Yes — foam rubber is commonly die-cut into custom gasket shapes, including cutouts, from sheet stock to match a specific panel, enclosure door, or equipment opening, rather than relying only on standard tape rolls or strip stock.
