What Is a Rotary Hammer Accessorie?
Rotary hammer accessories are the interchangeable bits, chisels and adapters that mount into a rotary hammer's shank system to drill or demolish masonry, concrete and stone using a combination of rotation and percussive hammer action. SDS-Plus (a 10mm shank with two open and two closed grooves) is standard on lighter rotary hammers for drilling up to roughly 1-1/8in diameter; SDS-Max (an 18mm shank with a different groove pattern) is used on heavier hammers for larger-diameter drilling and dedicated demolition work, and the two shank systems are not interchangeable without a dedicated adapter.
Bit tip material and geometry are matched to the substrate: carbide-tipped bits with a four-cutter head handle reinforced concrete and aggregate better than a two-cutter tip, which is adequate for softer brick and block. Chisels (flat, pointed, spade) mount into the same shank system but transmit pure hammer energy with the rotation function disengaged, and should be selected by demolition task — pointed chisels for breaking through, flat chisels for surface removal or channeling.

What's the difference between SDS-Plus and SDS-Max?
SDS-Plus uses a 10mm shank with two open and two closed grooves and is the standard for lighter rotary hammers, typically drilling up to about 1-1/8in diameter in masonry. SDS-Max uses a larger 18mm shank with a different groove pattern, mounts in heavier rotary hammers, and is used for larger-diameter drilling and dedicated demolition chisel work. The two shank systems are physically incompatible — an SDS-Plus bit will not fit an SDS-Max chuck or vice versa without a purpose-made adapter, which itself sacrifices some impact energy transfer.
Why do some SDS bits have four cutting edges instead of two?
A two-cutter carbide tip is adequate for softer masonry like brick and standard block, but tends to deflect or wander when it hits rebar or hard aggregate in reinforced concrete. A four-cutter tip presents a more symmetric cutting geometry that resists deflection and maintains a straighter hole through reinforced or aggregate-heavy concrete, at a modest cost premium over two-cutter bits.
Can I use a chisel accessory in a rotary hammer without switching modes?
Most rotary hammers have a selector to switch between rotary-only, hammer-only, and combined rotary-hammer modes; chisel accessories should only be used with rotation disengaged (hammer-only mode), since a chisel isn't designed to rotate under load and doing so can damage the tool or accessory and make the chisel uncontrollable. Always confirm the tool is set to hammer-only before installing a chisel bit.
How do I choose the right core bit for conduit penetrations?
Core bit diameter should be sized to the outside diameter of the conduit or pipe passing through, with enough clearance for sealant or a fire-stop sleeve if required by code — oversizing wastes time and weakens the surrounding material more than necessary. For deeper penetrations through thick walls, confirm the core bit's working length and whether dust extraction or water cooling is needed to prevent the bit from overheating and dulling prematurely.
Do SDS bits fit standard drill chucks?
No — SDS bits have a grooved shank designed to lock into a spring-loaded SDS chuck that allows the bit to move slightly in and out to transmit hammer impact, which a standard three-jaw chuck cannot replicate. A dedicated SDS-to-standard chuck adapter is available for occasionally running twist bits or accessories in a rotary hammer, but it disables the hammer function while installed.
