What Is a Stencils and Stencil Set?
Industrial stencils are specified first by character height, standardized in common increments (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch are most common) that correspond to legibility distance requirements on crates, drums, pipes and equipment — a larger character height is specified whenever the marking must be read from further away, such as on stacked warehouse crates or overhead pipe runs, rather than chosen for aesthetic reasons.
Material choice follows the marking method and durability need: oil board (waxed paperboard) stencils are inexpensive and disposable, suited to one-time spray-paint marking of crates or lumber; brass stencils resist solvent-based inks and repeated use better, common for ongoing shipping and inventory marking; and steel or stainless stencils are used where the stencil itself is used for metal stamping or etching rather than paint application. Interlocking sets let individual letters and numbers be assembled into custom words using built-in tabs and slots, avoiding the need for a full custom-cut stencil for each unique message.
