What Is a Drum Cover?
A drum cover is the removable lid fitted to an open-head drum, sealing the contents against contamination, evaporation and spillage while allowing full access to the drum interior for filling or emptying. Covers are matched to the drum's outer diameter and rim profile — a steel cover for a steel drum uses a rolled-edge chime that mates with a bolt ring or lever-lock band, while poly and fiber drums use covers molded or formed to their own specific chime dimensions.
The closure mechanism determines how securely the cover seals: a bolt ring assembly clamps the cover's chime against the drum chime with a threaded bolt and nut, generally the most secure option for regulated or hazardous contents, while lever-lock and snap-fit closures trade some clamping force for faster open/close cycling in non-hazardous, high-turnover applications. UN-rated covers, paired with a matching UN-rated drum and closure, are required for shipping hazardous materials under DOT and IMDG regulations.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Drum Size | 30, 55, 85 gallon (110, 205, 320 L) | Cover diameter and chime profile must match the specific drum, not just its nominal capacity |
| Material | Steel (18-24 gauge), HDPE poly, fiber | Steel resists puncture and fire; poly resists corrosion from acids and caustics; fiber suits dry, non-hazardous solids |
| Closure Type | Bolt ring, lever lock, snap-fit | Bolt rings give the highest clamping force for hazmat shipping; lever locks trade some seal integrity for speed |
| UN Rating | UN 1A2, 1H2 markings on cover/drum/closure | Required together as a matched, certified system to ship regulated hazardous materials |
| Gasket Material | Neoprene, EPDM, cork-nitrile | Gasket chemistry must be compatible with the drum's contents to prevent seal degradation and leaks |

FAQ
Drum Covers Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a bolt ring and a lever lock drum cover?
A bolt ring assembly clamps the cover chime to the drum chime with a threaded bolt tightened to a specified torque, giving the highest and most consistent clamping force — it's the standard for UN-rated hazmat shipping. A lever lock uses a hinged band tightened by a cam lever, which opens and closes much faster but generally provides a less consistent seal, making it better suited to non-hazardous, high-turnover applications like waste collection.
Do I need a UN-rated cover for my drum?
Only if you're shipping regulated hazardous materials under DOT (US) or IMDG (international) rules. UN rating applies to the drum, cover and closure as a matched, tested system — you can't mix a UN-rated drum with an unrated cover and claim the rating. Check the UN marking stamped on the drum body to confirm what closure system it was certified with.
Can I use a steel drum cover on a poly drum, or vice versa?
No — covers are formed to the specific chime profile and diameter of their matching drum material. A steel cover's rolled chime won't seat correctly on a poly drum's molded chime, and the mismatch will prevent a proper seal even if the nominal diameter matches.
What gasket material should I use for my drum contents?
Match the gasket to the chemistry of what's inside the drum: neoprene handles general-purpose oils and mild chemicals, EPDM holds up well against many acids and caustics but degrades with petroleum products, and cork-nitrile blends suit fuels and oils. Always check a chemical compatibility chart against the specific contents before finalizing a gasket choice.
How do I know what size cover fits my drum?
Measure the outer diameter of the drum's top chime (the rolled or molded lip), not the nominal gallon capacity alone, since chime dimensions can vary slightly between manufacturers even at the same rated capacity. If possible, match by the drum manufacturer and model, or bring the drum's chime measurement when ordering a replacement cover.
