What Is a Cleanroom Tacky Mat?
A cleanroom tacky mat is a stack of thin, individually numbered adhesive-coated sheets bonded together and placed at a cleanroom, lab or controlled-environment entryway. As foot traffic or cart wheels pass over the surface, the tacky top layer captures dust, dirt and particulate before it can be tracked further into the controlled space; once loaded, the top sheet is peeled away to expose a fresh tacky surface underneath.
Mats are specified by sheet count (commonly 30 or 60 peel layers per mat), base color, and adhesive chemistry — low-outgassing, low-VOC formulations are required for ISO Class 5-7 cleanrooms and semiconductor fabs, while standard mats suffice for general lab or light-industrial entryways. Mat size should match the doorway width so foot traffic cannot step around the mat's edge.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet/Layer Count | 30-layer, 60-layer per mat | More layers extend service life before a full mat replacement is needed |
| Adhesive Type | Standard acrylic vs. low-VOC/low-outgassing | Low-outgassing adhesive is required for particulate-sensitive ISO 5-7 environments |
| Mat Size | 18x36in, 24x36in, 36x60in common | Should span the full doorway width so traffic cannot bypass the mat |
| Base Color | Gray, white, blue, black | Lighter colors show soil loading more visibly, prompting timely peel changes |
| Frame/Mount | Frameless peel mat vs. mat-in-frame kit | A frame keeps mat edges from curling or becoming a trip hazard in high-traffic entries |

FAQ
Cleanroom Tacky Mats Questions, Answered
How many peel layers does a tacky mat need?
30-layer mats suit lower-traffic entries changed weekly; 60-layer mats extend service life in high-traffic entries without doubling mat purchases. Layer count should be matched to foot traffic volume and your facility's cleaning schedule.
Do I need low-VOC or low-outgassing tacky mats for a cleanroom?
Yes, for ISO Class 5-7 environments and semiconductor or optics applications where standard adhesive outgassing could contaminate sensitive processes. General lab and light-industrial entries can typically use standard-grade tacky mats.
How do I know when to peel off a layer?
Peel when the surface visibly loses tack or shows heavy soil buildup — most facilities set a fixed interval (daily or per shift) based on traffic volume rather than waiting for visible saturation, since a loaded layer stops trapping additional particulate.
Should the mat be framed or frameless?
A frame kit keeps mat edges secured and reduces curling or bunching in high-traffic doorways, which is safer underfoot; frameless mats are simpler to service and are common in lower-traffic lab entries.
What size mat do I need for my doorway?
Size the mat to span the full doorway width plus a few inches of margin — foot traffic will simply step around a mat narrower than the doorway, defeating its purpose.
