What Is a Heat Slinger?
A heat slinger (portable forced-air heater) is sized primarily by BTU/hr output, which must be matched against the space's volume, ceiling height, insulation level and the outdoor design temperature for the region — a rough sizing method uses roughly 30-60 BTU/hr per square foot for typical shop/warehouse ceiling heights, adjusted upward for poor insulation, high ceilings or large door openings that let heat escape. Fuel type is chosen against what's available and practical on site: electric units need no ventilation or fuel storage but require adequate circuit capacity; propane units offer high BTU output in a portable package but produce combustion byproducts requiring adequate ventilation; and oil-fired units are common for larger, permanently sited or semi-permanent heating needs.
Direct-fired heaters release 100% of combustion byproducts into the heated space and require the specified minimum ventilation (typically stated as CFM of fresh air per BTU/hr of input) to keep carbon monoxide within safe limits, while indirect-fired heaters vent combustion exhaust outside through a flue, making them suitable for occupied spaces where combustion byproducts can't be tolerated, such as spaces with sensitive materials or extended occupancy.

How do I size a heat slinger for my shop?

For anything beyond a rough estimate, a proper heat loss calculation accounting for all these factors gives a more accurate sizing than square-footage rules of thumb alone.
What's the difference between direct-fired and indirect-fired heaters?
A direct-fired heater releases all combustion exhaust directly into the heated space, which requires a specified minimum amount of fresh air ventilation (often stated as CFM per BTU/hr of heater input) to keep carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts within safe limits. An indirect-fired heater burns fuel in a separate combustion chamber and vents the exhaust outside through a flue or duct, keeping combustion byproducts out of the occupied space entirely — necessary where ventilation can't be guaranteed or where clean air matters.
Can I use a propane heater indoors without ventilation?
No — direct-fired propane heaters require adequate fresh air ventilation per the manufacturer's specification to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup, and this requirement is not optional. If sufficient ventilation can't be provided, an indirect-fired or electric heater is the appropriate choice for that space instead.
