What Is a Black Pipe Nipple Assortment?
A black pipe nipple is a short length of Schedule 40 black steel pipe, threaded on both ends per NPT (National Pipe Thread), used to join two fittings directly or extend a pipe run by a fixed length. Nipple assortments pack a range of common lengths (from close nipples with no unthreaded shoulder up through 12 inches) for one or several NPT sizes into a single box, avoiding the need to stock each length individually as a separate SKU.
Black pipe (uncoated, not galvanized) is the standard for fuel gas, compressed air, and steam piping because zinc coating on galvanized pipe can flake and contaminate gas trains or react at high temperature; it is not intended for potable water, where galvanized or other corrosion-resistant piping is used instead. Nipple assortments are sized and threaded to ASME B1.20.1 pipe thread standards so they mate with any standard NPT fitting regardless of manufacturer.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| NPT Size | 1/8 in. through 2 in. nominal pipe size | Must match the mating fitting's thread size exactly — NPT sizes are not interchangeable with metric BSP threads |
| Length Range | Close nipple (no shoulder) up to 12 in., in an assortment box | A close nipple has threads meeting in the middle with no exposed pipe body, used where space is tightest |
| Schedule/Wall Thickness | Schedule 40 (standard wall) most common | Schedule 80 nipples are used for higher-pressure service; confirm rating for the intended application |
| Material Finish | Black (uncoated) steel, not galvanized | Black pipe is specified for fuel gas, air and steam; galvanized or other materials are used for potable water |
| Thread Standard | NPT per ASME B1.20.1, tapered pipe thread | Tapered NPT threads seal by thread interference plus sealant — not a substitute for straight/parallel BSPP threads |

FAQ
Black Pipe Nipple Assortments Questions, Answered
Can black pipe nipples be used for potable water lines?
No. Black pipe is uncoated steel and will rust when exposed to water over time, which is why it's reserved for fuel gas, compressed air, and steam service. Potable water piping should use galvanized steel, copper, CPVC, or another corrosion-resistant material appropriate to local plumbing code.
What is a 'close nipple' and when is it used?
A close nipple is the shortest possible nipple, threaded its entire length with no unthreaded shoulder in the middle, used to join two fittings directly with minimal spacing — for example, connecting a valve directly to a tee. Because there's no exposed pipe body, close nipples are more prone to thread damage during installation and should be hand-started carefully.
What's the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 nipples?
Schedule 40 has a standard wall thickness suitable for most low-to-moderate pressure gas, air, and steam applications. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall for the same nominal pipe size, rated for higher pressure service. Confirm the pressure rating required by your application's code or engineering spec before substituting one for the other.
Are black pipe nipples interchangeable with galvanized nipples?
They share the same NPT thread standard and nominal sizing, so they will thread together, but they should not be substituted for each other by service: black pipe for gas/air/steam, galvanized for water and outdoor/corrosive exposure. Mixing dissimilar metals (e.g., black steel with galvanized) can also accelerate galvanic corrosion at the joint in wet environments.
What comes in a typical nipple assortment box?
A typical assortment includes a range of lengths — often close nipples through 12 inches — for one NPT size (e.g., all 1/2 in.) or, in a master assortment, multiple sizes in one kit, organized into a compartmented box for quick selection. Piece counts and exact length breakdowns vary by kit, so check the specific assortment's contents list.
