What Is a Welding Cylinder Cart?
A welding cylinder cart is a wheeled frame that holds one or more compressed gas cylinders upright and secured with a chain or strap, allowing safe transport of heavy, pressurized cylinders around a shop or jobsite without tipping or dragging them. Dual cylinder carts, sized for a standard oxygen-acetylene oxy-fuel torch setup, are the most common configuration, typically including a tool tray and hooks for the torch, hose and gauges.
Cylinder cart selection is driven by how many and what size cylinders it must hold — carts are sized for specific cylinder diameters (commonly sized for standard industrial cylinders) and capacity is limited by frame base width and wheel design rather than a single rated weight alone. Larger wheels, particularly pneumatic or semi-pneumatic types, are preferred for jobsite and uneven-terrain use, while smaller solid wheels suit smooth shop floors.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder Capacity | Single, dual (oxy-fuel), multi-cylinder | Determines frame width and required chain/strap points for secure hold |
| Cylinder Size Fit | Sized for standard industrial cylinder diameters | Cart cradle/base must match cylinder diameter for a stable, non-tipping fit |
| Wheel Type | Solid rubber, semi-pneumatic, pneumatic | Pneumatic wheels handle jobsite/uneven terrain better than solid shop wheels |
| Accessories | Tool tray, hose hooks, torch holder | Keeps torch, gauges and hose organized and off the ground during transport |
| Restraint System | Chain, strap, or bracket securing method | OSHA requires cylinders be secured against tipping during transport and storage |

FAQ
Welding Cylinder Carts Questions, Answered
What size cylinders fit a standard dual cylinder cart?
Most dual (oxy-fuel) carts are sized for standard industrial-size oxygen and acetylene cylinders; always check the cart's stated cylinder diameter range and cradle dimensions against your specific cylinder size, since larger or smaller cylinders than the cart is designed for won't sit securely.
Why do cylinders need to be chained or strapped to the cart?
A pressurized gas cylinder that tips over and its valve breaks off can become an uncontrolled projectile due to the released pressure — OSHA and standard shop safety practice require cylinders to be secured against tipping at all times, whether on a cart, in storage, or during transport.
Solid or pneumatic wheels — which cart should I choose?
Solid rubber wheels are simpler, puncture-proof and suit smooth shop floors. Pneumatic (air-filled) or semi-pneumatic wheels roll more easily over gravel, uneven ground and jobsite debris, making them the better choice for outdoor or rough-terrain cylinder transport.
Can I use a single-cylinder hand truck for oxy-fuel welding?
A single-cylinder cart only holds one cylinder, so oxy-fuel welding (which requires both an oxygen and a fuel gas cylinder) needs either two single carts or, more commonly, a dedicated dual cylinder cart designed to hold both cylinders together with the torch and hose.
What accessories are worth adding to a welding cart?
A tool tray keeps torch tips, wrenches and consumables off the ground and with the cylinders; hose hooks and a torch holder keep the torch and hose coiled and off the floor between uses, reducing trip hazards and hose damage from being dragged.
