What Is a Felt Sheets and Strip?
Felt sheets and strips are non-woven material made by matting and pressing wool, synthetic, or blended fibers under heat and pressure, producing a dense, compressible material used for low-pressure sealing, dust wiping, vibration dampening, and polishing applications. Unlike woven fabric, felt has no directional grain, so it can be die-cut into gaskets, washers, and pads in any shape without fraying at the edges.
Felt is graded by hardness under the SAE F-series and industrial soft/medium/hard classifications — F1 grades are the softest and most compressible, suited to wiping and light sealing, while F5 and harder grades hold their shape under load and are used as bearing seals and oil-retaining wicks. Wool felt has superior oil-wicking and resilience for machine tool applications; synthetic (polyester or acrylic) felt costs less and resists moisture and mildew better, making it common in gasketing and general industrial padding.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness Grade | SAE F1 (soft) through F5 (hard) | Soft grades compress and wipe; hard grades hold shape and dimension under load |
| Fiber Type | 100% wool, synthetic (polyester/acrylic), blend | Wool wicks oil better; synthetic resists moisture and costs less |
| Thickness | 1/32 in to 1 in, sheet or roll stock | Selected to match the gap or clearance being sealed or cushioned |
| Density | Measured in oz/sq ft or lb/cu ft | Higher density improves oil retention and wear resistance in bearing seals |
| Backing Option | Plain, pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) | PSA-backed strips install without separate fasteners or adhesive application |

Applications
Where Felt Sheets and Strips Get Used
Felt sheet and strip stock is specified wherever a low-pressure seal, wipe, cushion, or polish needs a compressible, non-directional material that can be die-cut to shape.
Machine Tool Oil Seals & Wicks
Wool felt wipers and wicks on spindles and slideways, wicking and retaining lubricating oil while excluding chips and dust.
Gasketing & Vibration Dampening
Felt gasket sheet cut to pattern for low-pressure static seals and as anti-vibration padding under mounted equipment.
HVAC & Filtration
Synthetic felt media and pads used as pre-filters and gasketing in ductwork and air handling equipment.
Furniture & Cabinet Hardware
Adhesive-backed felt strips and pads applied as surface protectors and quiet-close bumpers.
Polishing & Buffing
Hard felt wheels and pads used with polishing compound for metal finishing and deburring.
Automotive & Appliance Manufacturing
Die-cut felt washers and gaskets used as dust seals and cushioning around moving components.
FAQ
Felt Sheets and Strips Questions, Answered
What do the SAE F-grade numbers mean on felt?
SAE F-grades (F1 through F5, sometimes higher) rate felt from softest and most compressible (F1) to hardest and most dimensionally stable (F5 and above). Soft grades are chosen for wiping and light sealing where the felt needs to conform to a surface; hard grades are chosen where the felt must hold its shape and thickness under continuous mechanical load, such as a bearing seal.
Should I choose wool felt or synthetic felt for an oil seal application?
Wool felt has naturally superior oil-wicking and retention properties and better resilience after repeated compression, which is why it remains standard for machine tool spindle wipers and oil-retaining wicks. Synthetic felt (polyester or acrylic) costs less, resists moisture and mildew better, and is adequate for general gasketing and padding where oil-wicking performance isn't the deciding factor.
What thickness of felt should I use for a gasket application?
Felt gasket thickness is chosen to match the gap being sealed and the compression the joint allows — thinner felt (1/32 to 1/8 in) suits tight, low-movement joints, while thicker stock cushions larger gaps or absorbs more vibration. As a general rule, size the felt so it compresses roughly 25-50% under assembly load rather than bottoming out.
Can felt sheet be die-cut into custom gasket or washer shapes?
Yes — felt has no woven grain direction, so it die-cuts cleanly into washers, gaskets, and pads in any pattern without fraying at the cut edge, which is why it's commonly supplied as die-cut shapes rather than only as flat sheet stock. Sheet and roll stock remain the base material for custom die-cutting to a customer's drawing.
What's the benefit of adhesive-backed felt strips over plain felt?
Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing lets a felt strip or pad be applied directly to a clean surface without separate fasteners, contact cement, or curing time, which speeds up assembly for surface-protection and bumper pad applications. Plain (non-adhesive) felt is preferred where the felt must be mechanically retained, replaced periodically, or where PSA adhesive isn't compatible with the operating temperature or the surface finish.
