What Is a Wall Packs and Wall Mount Fixture?

A wall pack is an exterior light fixture mounted flush or on a bracket directly to a building wall, designed to illuminate the building perimeter, entrances, loading docks and adjacent parking areas. Full cutoff wall packs direct all light downward with no light emitted above the horizontal plane of the fixture, meeting dark-sky ordinances and reducing light trespass onto neighboring properties, while semi-cutoff and non-cutoff styles allow some upward or lateral light spill, typically used where dark-sky compliance isn't required.

Lumen output and wattage are selected against the area's required footcandle level and mounting height — a higher mounting position needs greater lumen output to maintain the same ground-level illumination as a lower-mounted fixture. Most commercial LED wall packs integrate or accept an add-on photocell for dusk-to-dawn automatic operation, and many are rated for direct wet-location wall mounting per UL listing requirements for exterior use.

Cutoff ClassificationFull cutoff, semi-cutoff, non-cutoffFull cutoff is required by many dark-sky ordinances and reduces glare and light trespass
Lumen Output / WattageRanges from ~2,000 to 20,000+ lumensSized to mounting height and target footcandle level for the illuminated area
Color Temperature (CCT)Commonly 4000K or 5000K for security lightingHigher CCT gives a whiter, higher-contrast light often preferred for security applications
Mounting TypeFlush wall mount vs. trunnion (adjustable) mountTrunnion mounts allow aiming adjustment; flush mounts are fixed-direction

FAQ

Wall Packs and Wall Mount Fixtures Questions, Answered

What's the difference between full cutoff, semi-cutoff and non-cutoff wall packs?

Full cutoff fixtures emit zero light above the horizontal plane of the fixture, minimizing glare and light trespass onto neighboring properties — often required by dark-sky ordinances. Semi-cutoff allows a small percentage of light above horizontal, and non-cutoff (older, less common) style fixtures allow more light spill in all directions.

How do I determine what wattage or lumen output I need for a wall pack?

Lumen requirements depend on mounting height and the target footcandle level for the area — a lighting layout or footcandle calculation for the specific area is the accurate method, but as a rough guide, higher mounting heights and larger areas need proportionally more lumen output to maintain adequate ground-level light.

Do wall packs need a separate photocell, or is it built in?

Many commercial LED wall packs include an integrated photocell for automatic dusk-to-dawn operation, but some models are sold without one for installations controlled by a building's lighting control system or timer instead — check the specific fixture's control options before assuming photocell operation.

What color temperature is best for security lighting?

4000K to 5000K is most common for exterior security lighting, giving a whiter, higher-contrast light that many find improves visibility and perceived security compared to warmer 3000K light, though local preference and any dark-sky ordinance restrictions on color temperature should also be checked.

Can a decorative wall mount fixture meet the same lighting output as a standard wall pack?

Decorative wall mount fixtures can achieve comparable lumen output to standard wall packs, but their design often trades some light distribution efficiency for aesthetics, so compare the fixture's actual lumen output and distribution pattern rather than assuming equivalent performance based on wattage alone.
