What Is a Trash Bag?
Trash bag strength is set by two independent variables: resin type and gauge/mil thickness. Low-density (LLDPE) resin is stretchy and puncture-resistant, favored for sharp or heavy debris like broken glass or metal shavings, while high-density (HDPE) resin is thinner, crinkly, and more cost-efficient per bag for lighter, non-sharp waste like office paper — meaning a thinner HDPE bag can outperform a thicker LDPE bag on the right waste stream despite the lower mil rating.
Gauge (or mil, 1 mil = 0.001 inch) is often marketed inconsistently between LLDPE and HDPE lines since the resins have different tensile strength per mil, so comparing two bags by mil number alone across resin types is misleading — the manufacturer's rated load capacity in pounds is the more reliable spec for matching a bag to expected waste weight. Bag dimensions should also exceed the container's rim circumference and depth by enough to cuff over the edge without slipping.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resin Type | LLDPE (linear low-density) vs. HDPE (high-density) | LLDPE resists puncture/tear on sharp debris; HDPE is thinner and more economical for general trash |
| Gauge/Mil Thickness | 0.35 mil (light HDPE) to 3+ mil (contractor LLDPE) | Higher mil generally means higher load capacity but isn't directly comparable across resin types |
| Bag Size | Matched to container gallon capacity and dimensions | Undersized bags slip off the rim; oversized bags bunch and reduce effective can capacity |
| Star Seal vs. Flat/Gusseted Bottom | Seal style affects load distribution and leak resistance | Star-sealed bottoms distribute weight more evenly and resist leaking at the seams |
| Color Coding | Clear/blue (recycling), red (biohazard), black/white (general) | Color coding is often required by facility or regulatory waste-stream segregation policy |

FAQ
Trash Bags Questions, Answered
Should I choose LLDPE or HDPE for construction debris?
LLDPE (low-density linear resin) is the right choice for construction debris because it stretches rather than tearing when punctured by sharp or jagged material, whereas HDPE is thinner and more prone to puncturing outright under the same sharp load, even at a comparable mil rating.
Why do two bags with the same mil rating have different strength?
Mil thickness alone doesn't account for resin type — LLDPE and HDPE have different tensile and puncture strength per mil of material, so a 1.5 mil LLDPE bag and a 1.5 mil HDPE bag are not equivalent in load capacity; rated load capacity in pounds is the more reliable comparison across resin types.
How do I pick the right bag size for my trash can?
Match the bag's flat width (roughly half the can's rim circumference) and length (can depth plus enough to cuff over the rim) to the container's actual dimensions, not just its gallon rating, since two cans of the same gallon capacity can have different shapes requiring different bag dimensions.
Are red biohazard bags required by regulation, or just convention?
Color coding for medical/biohazard waste is typically mandated by OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard and state/local regulations requiring visual identification of regulated medical waste, so red (or orange, per some state rules) bags with the biohazard symbol are a compliance requirement, not just a facility preference.
What does 'star seal' mean and why does it matter?
A star-seal bottom is formed by folding and sealing the bag's bottom corners into a star pattern rather than a single flat seam, which distributes the weight of the contents more evenly across the seal and reduces the chance of a single seam failing under a heavy or unevenly distributed load.
