Traffic Barricade and Traffic Cone Accessories

MUTCD guidance specifies reflective banding at defined heights on a traffic cone for consistent driver recognition and conspicuity, so a collar is sized to sit correctly on a specific cone height (commonly 18", 28" or 36") — a collar sized for the wrong cone height can sit too high or low, or fit loosely and slip out of position, reducing its intended visibility benefit.

Type A is a low-intensity flashing light for lower-speed or lower-risk applications, Type B is a high-intensity flashing light for higher-speed roadways or greater required conspicuity, and Type C is a steady-burn (non-flashing) light typically used to delineate a continuous line such as a channelizing taper. Match the light type to the application's speed and visibility requirement per the MUTCD or the governing local traffic control plan.

Weighted bases or added ballast rings are important anywhere the cone is exposed to wind or to the airflow generated by passing vehicles at speed, both of which can tip or displace a lightweight cone — a displaced cone not only fails to mark the intended path but becomes its own roadway hazard. Higher-speed roadway applications generally warrant more aggressive ballast than low-speed lot or event use.

A connector bar links adjacent cones or barricades into a continuous physical and visual barrier rather than a row of separate objects with gaps between them, which helps prevent vehicles or pedestrians from driving or walking between individual units and reinforces the intended traffic path more clearly than unconnected cones alone.

Engineer grade sheeting provides basic reflectivity adequate for lower-speed or lower-risk applications, while high-intensity or diamond grade sheeting reflects more light back to a driver's headlights at greater distance and in poorer weather conditions, which is typically specified for higher-speed roadway work zones per the governing traffic control plan or local DOT requirement.
