What Is a Thread Repair Kit?
A thread repair kit is a complete matched set — pre-insert drill bit, insert-specific tap, one or more inserts, and an installation tool — for repairing a single stripped or damaged internal thread size and standard, packaged so every component is correctly sized to work together without the buyer needing to separately source and match a drill/tap/insert combination. Master or multi-size kits bundle several common thread sizes (often a mix of UNC and metric, or a fractional range) into one case for shops that repair a variety of stripped threads and don't want to stock individual single-size kits for every size they might encounter.
The repair process is consistent across kit types: drill out the damaged thread to the kit's specified pre-insert diameter, tap the new hole with the kit's matched tap to cut the insert's internal thread form, thread the insert in with the installation tool until it's seated at or slightly below the surface, then (for coil inserts) break off the installation tang using the punch or break-off tool included in most kits. Buying a kit rather than sourcing components separately also avoids a common and difficult-to-diagnose failure mode — a tap and drill that are individually correct sizes for two different insert brands, which won't produce a properly matched thread even though each tool appears correctly labeled.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kit Scope | Single thread size vs. master/multi-size kit | Single-size kits suit repetitive one-size repair work; master kits suit varied, occasional repair needs |
| Insert Style Included | Helical coil vs. solid bushing | Determines base material suitability — coil for general repair, solid bushing for soft materials |
| Thread Standard Coverage | UNC, UNF, ISO metric coarse/fine, or mixed in master kits | Must match the actual fastener standard in the equipment being repaired |
| Included Tooling | Drill bit, tap, install tool, tang break tool, gauge | A complete kit avoids mismatched drill/tap/insert sourcing errors from separate suppliers |
| Insert Material | 18-8 stainless steel, phosphor bronze | Determines corrosion resistance and compatibility with the fastener being installed |

FAQ
Thread Repair Kits Questions, Answered
What's included in a standard thread repair kit?
A typical single-size kit includes a pre-insert drill bit sized to the correct pilot hole diameter, a tap matched to cut the insert's internal thread form, one or more inserts of that size, an installation tool (mandrel for coil inserts, driver for solid bushings), and for coil-insert kits, a tang break-off tool. Master kits bundle this same set of tooling across several common thread sizes in one case.
Is a master thread repair kit worth it over buying single-size kits as needed?
A master kit makes sense for a shop or facility that repairs stripped threads across a variety of sizes unpredictably, since it avoids repeated individual purchases and ensures the right tooling is on hand when a repair comes up. A shop that repeats the same one or two thread sizes routinely (like an automotive shop doing mostly spark plug thread repair) is often better served by a dedicated single-size kit with more insert refills, rather than paying for sizes that see little use.
Can I use a generic tap and drill instead of the ones included in the kit?
It's not recommended — the drill and tap in a thread repair kit are sized specifically to the insert's outside thread form and required pilot diameter, and different insert manufacturers' inserts aren't always dimensionally identical even at the same nominal thread size. Substituting a generic drill/tap risks an insert that doesn't seat correctly or doesn't develop full holding strength, which defeats the purpose of the repair.
How do I know if my stripped thread is a good candidate for a repair kit vs. needing a different fix?
A thread repair kit works well when there's enough surrounding material for the kit's pre-insert drill diameter (larger than the original tapped hole) and when the damage is limited to the threads rather than the surrounding casting or structure. If the stripped hole is too close to an edge, another feature, or a wall for the kit's drill size, or if there's cracking beyond just the thread damage, a different repair approach (or part replacement) may be needed.
Do thread repair kits work on both new and pre-stripped/damaged threads?
Yes — the kit's drill bit is sized to bore out the existing damaged thread material entirely, so it works whether the original thread is completely stripped, partially damaged, or even being intentionally upsized (installing an insert into a previously undamaged hole to add strength or wear resistance). The process is the same regardless of the original thread's condition, since the drill removes it either way.
