What Is a Spray Gun Accessorie?
Spray gun accessories are the wear and setup components — nozzles/tips, air caps, fluid cups, filters and seals — that determine a spray gun's atomization pattern, material flow rate and finish quality. Nozzle (fluid tip) size is the primary spec controlling flow rate and is chosen based on the coating material's viscosity: thinner materials like stains use smaller tips (1.0-1.3mm), while thicker primers and heavier coatings need larger tips (1.7-2.5mm) to atomize properly without excessive pressure.
Airless spray tips use a different sizing system than HVLP/conventional nozzles — a two- or three-digit code (e.g., 515) where the first digit(s) indicate the fan width and the last two indicate the orifice size in thousandths of an inch, and airless tips wear and must be replaced periodically as the orifice enlarges and degrades spray pattern control. Accessories are generally brand/model-specific, since fluid cup thread patterns, air cap seating and nozzle threading vary between manufacturers.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle/Tip Size | 1.0-2.5mm (HVLP); size-coded (airless) | Controls atomization and flow rate — must match the coating material's viscosity |
| Air Cap Type | HVLP, conventional, compliant | Determines spray pattern shape and atomizing air pressure/volume characteristics |
| Fluid Cup Capacity | Commonly 600ml-1000ml (gravity feed) | Sized to job volume — larger cups reduce refill interruptions on bigger jobs |
| Filter Mesh Size | Coarse to fine, color-coded by mesh count | Prevents debris from clogging the nozzle; finer mesh needed for thinner, higher-quality finishes |
| Gun Compatibility | Brand/model-specific threading and seating | Accessories are generally not universal across brands — confirm compatibility before ordering |

FAQ
Spray Gun Accessories Questions, Answered
How do I choose the right nozzle/tip size for my coating material?
Match tip size to material viscosity — thinner materials like stains and lacquers typically use smaller tips (around 1.0-1.3mm), general topcoats and enamels use mid-range tips (1.3-1.7mm), and heavier primers or textured coatings need larger tips (1.7mm and up) to atomize without requiring excessive pressure that degrades finish quality.
How does airless spray tip sizing work?
Airless tips use a numeric code, commonly three digits, where the first digit (or first two) indicates the fan width when held at a standard distance, and the last two digits indicate the orifice diameter in thousandths of an inch — e.g., a 515 tip has roughly a 10-inch fan and a 0.015 in orifice.
When should I replace a spray gun nozzle or tip?
Replace when spray pattern becomes inconsistent, tails or streaks appear that weren't present before, or flow rate drops noticeably at the same pressure setting — these are signs the orifice has worn enlarged or irregular, especially common with airless tips spraying abrasive coatings.
Are spray gun accessories interchangeable between brands?
Generally no — fluid cup threading, air cap seating and nozzle thread patterns are brand and often model-specific, so an accessory from one manufacturer usually won't fit another gun without an adapter. Confirm your gun's exact brand and model before ordering replacement parts.
What filter mesh size should I use?
Filter mesh is typically color-coded by mesh count — coarser filters (lower mesh count) for heavier, filled coatings like primers, and finer filters (higher mesh count) for thin, high-quality finish coats where even small particles would show in the finish. Check your gun and coating manufacturer's recommendation for the specific material.
