What Is a Task Lighting?
Task lighting refers to focused, adjustable light fixtures positioned close to a specific work area — a workbench, machine tool or inspection station — to supplement general facility lighting where higher, more directed illumination is needed for detail work. Unlike area/ambient lighting, task lights are typically adjustable in position (gooseneck, articulating arm, or clamp) so the light can be aimed precisely at the task.
Machine-mount task lights are commonly specified at 24VAC or 24VDC to match a machine's low-voltage control circuit rather than line voltage, both for safety near coolant/moving parts and for direct integration with the machine's existing power supply. Lumen output and beam pattern should be matched to the task's visual demand — fine inspection or assembly work benefits from higher lumens and a tighter beam than general bench illumination.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting Type | Gooseneck, magnetic base, clamp-on, hardwired | Determines installation flexibility and repositioning ease at the work area |
| Power Source | Line voltage (120/240V), 24V machine circuit, battery/rechargeable | Machine-mount lights are commonly 24V to match the machine's control transformer, not line voltage |
| Lumen Output | Ranges widely by fixture size and intended task | Higher lumens needed for fine inspection/assembly vs. general bench illumination |
| Adjustability | Fixed, gooseneck-flexible, articulating arm | Gooseneck/articulating designs allow precise aiming at a specific task point |
| Environmental Rating | IP-rated for coolant/washdown exposure near machine tools | Standard fixtures near a mill or lathe risk coolant ingress without an appropriate IP rating |

FAQ
Task Lighting Questions, Answered
Why are machine-mount task lights often 24V instead of standard 120V?
Many CNC machines and industrial equipment run their control circuits at 24VAC or 24VDC, and mounting a task light on that same low-voltage circuit is both safer near coolant and moving parts, and simpler to wire directly into the machine's existing control transformer rather than running a separate line-voltage circuit to the machine.
What lumen output do I need for a workbench task light?
This depends on the detail level of the work — general assembly or inspection benefits from meaningfully more light than ambient shop lighting alone provides, while fine electronics or precision inspection work typically calls for higher lumen output and a tighter, more controllable beam pattern.
Do I need an IP-rated task light near a CNC machine?
If the light is mounted where coolant mist, chips or washdown spray could reach it, yes — a standard task light not rated for that exposure risks water or coolant ingress into the fixture over time, shortening its service life or creating an electrical hazard.
What's the advantage of a gooseneck light over a fixed task light?
A gooseneck (or articulating arm) design lets the light be repositioned and aimed precisely at the current task point, which matters when the work area or angle changes throughout the day — a fixed-position light can't adapt the same way without physically remounting it.
Are LED task lights better than older fluorescent or halogen options?
LED task lights generally run cooler, last significantly longer, and are more efficient than halogen or fluorescent equivalents, plus most current-generation task lighting on the market is LED-based, making it the practical default for new installations.
