What Is a Tapping Head?
A tapping head is a tool holder that drives a tap into a pre-drilled hole and reverses its rotation to back the tap out, without requiring the machine spindle itself to reverse. Self-reversing heads contain an internal reversing mechanism triggered at a set depth, making them the standard for CNC machining centers and multi-spindle drill presses that don't spindle-reverse cleanly, while tension-compression (floating) heads allow the tap slight axial movement to compensate for feed-rate mismatch between the machine and the tap's actual thread pitch.
Tap size range and drive type must match the machine and the tap shank being used — most heads accept a range of tap sizes via interchangeable collets or square-drive tap holders. Tension-compression capability is critical on rigid-tapping-capable CNCs to prevent thread damage from small synchronization errors between spindle rotation and Z-axis feed.

What's the difference between a self-reversing and a tension-compression tapping head?
A self-reversing tapping head has an internal mechanism that reverses the tap's rotation direction at the bottom of the hole without needing the machine spindle to reverse, making it suited to machines that spindle-reverse slowly or not at all. A tension-compression (floating) head keeps the spindle rotating in one direction but allows the tap a small amount of axial float to absorb any mismatch between the machine's programmed feed rate and the tap's actual thread lead, which protects the thread and the tap on rigid-tapping-capable CNCs.
Do I need a tapping head if my CNC already has rigid tapping capability?
