What Is a Universal Coupling?
A universal (Cardan-joint) coupling connects two shafts through a cross-shaped center trunnion pinned between two yokes, allowing the shafts to operate at an angular offset while still transmitting torque. A single-joint coupling introduces a cyclical variation in output speed proportional to the misalignment angle — the greater the angle, the more pronounced the speed fluctuation within each shaft revolution — which is why single joints are typically limited to smaller angles or non-precision applications.
A double Cardan (double-cardan) coupling places two single joints in series with an intermediate shaft, phased so the speed variation introduced by the first joint is canceled by the second, producing constant-velocity output even at meaningful misalignment angles. This makes double-Cardan and true constant-velocity couplings the standard choice wherever precise, uniform rotational speed must be maintained across a misaligned drive — such as steering linkages, indexing drives and instrumentation shafts.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Joint Configuration | Single Cardan vs. double Cardan (constant-velocity) | Double Cardan cancels the cyclical speed variation a single joint introduces at an angle |
| Bore Size & Type | Round bore, keyed, or hex bore, various diameters | Must match the driven and driving shaft diameter and keyway for a positive drive fit |
| Maximum Misalignment Angle | Typically 15-45° depending on design | Operating beyond rated angle accelerates trunnion and bearing wear |
| Torque Rating | Continuous and peak torque capacity, in-lb or Nm | Peak torque must exceed system shock loads, not just steady-state running torque |
| Material & Finish | Steel, stainless steel, with plating options | Stainless or plated couplings resist corrosion in washdown or outdoor environments |

FAQ
Universal Couplings Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a single U-joint and a double Cardan coupling?
A single U-joint (Cardan joint) introduces a cyclical speed variation on the output shaft whenever the shafts are misaligned — the output speeds up and slows down twice per revolution, with the effect growing at larger angles. A double Cardan coupling uses two joints in series with a properly phased intermediate shaft so the second joint's speed variation cancels the first's, delivering constant-velocity output even at significant misalignment — which is why it's specified wherever speed uniformity matters, like steering systems.
How much shaft misalignment can a universal coupling handle?
Rated misalignment varies by design, typically 15° to 45°, and running a coupling beyond its rated angle accelerates wear on the trunnion bearings and can introduce excessive backlash or vibration. Always check the manufacturer's rated angle against your actual installed shaft offset, including any dynamic movement during operation, not just the static alignment.
Do I need a keyed bore or a set-screw bore for my coupling?
A keyed bore with a matching keyway on the shaft gives a stronger, backlash-free positive drive suited to higher torque and reversing loads. A set-screw (round bore) coupling is simpler to install and adequate for lighter, unidirectional loads, but is more prone to slipping under shock or reversing torque unless properly torqued and periodically checked.
What torque rating should I specify for a universal coupling?
Size the coupling to the peak or shock torque in the system, not just the steady-state running torque — a coupling rated only to continuous torque can be damaged by a sudden load spike, jam, or start-up inrush. Include a reasonable safety factor above the calculated peak torque, especially in applications with frequent starts, stops, or reversing loads.
Can universal couplings be used outdoors or in washdown environments?
Standard steel couplings will corrode in wet, washdown, or outdoor exposure unless protected. For these environments, specify stainless steel construction or a coupling with a corrosion-resistant plating, and confirm the trunnion bearings or bushings are also rated for the same exposure, since internal corrosion is often the first failure point.
