What Is a Swivel Connector?
Rigging swivel connectors — swivel hoist rings, shackles and eye bolts — allow a lifted load to rotate freely relative to the lifting point, preventing the sling or chain from twisting and inducing side loading that a fixed connection point can't safely handle. Each rigging swivel is rated with a Working Load Limit (WLL) that must never be exceeded and typically de-rates significantly under angular (non-vertical) loading, which must be accounted for in the actual rigging geometry, not just the straight vertical lift capacity.
Hydraulic and pneumatic swivel fittings serve a different function — they allow a hose or pipe connection to rotate without the hose itself twisting, reducing wear and fatigue failure at the connection point in applications with rotating machinery or frequently repositioned hose runs. These are rated by working pressure (not load) and must match both the thread standard (JIC, NPT, BSP, etc.) and pressure class of the hydraulic or pneumatic system, since an underrated swivel becomes the weak point in an otherwise correctly rated system.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Working Load Limit (Rigging) | Rated in lbs/tons per connector size | Must never be exceeded, and de-rates under angular (non-vertical) loading conditions |
| Connection Thread | UNC/UNF bolt thread (rigging), JIC/NPT/BSP (hydraulic) | Must match the mating bolt hole or fitting thread exactly |
| Rotation Type | 360° full rotation vs. limited-swing pivot | Determines whether the connector accommodates continuous rotation or only load alignment |
| Pressure Rating (Hydraulic/Pneumatic) | Rated working PSI/bar per fitting | Swivel must meet or exceed the system's maximum operating pressure, not just static rating |
| Material/Finish | Forged alloy steel, zinc/chrome plating | Determines load capacity and corrosion resistance for the operating environment |

FAQ
Swivel Connectors Questions, Answered
Why does a swivel hoist ring's WLL decrease at an angle?
A swivel hoist ring's rated WLL assumes a straight vertical pull; loading it at an angle introduces a side-load component the bail and swivel mechanism weren't primarily designed to carry, which reduces the safe capacity — manufacturers publish de-rating charts for angular loading, and rigging plans must account for the actual sling angle rather than assuming full vertical-rated capacity applies at any angle.
What's the difference between a rigging swivel and a hydraulic swivel fitting?
A rigging swivel (hoist ring, shackle, eye bolt) is rated by Working Load Limit and lets a lifted load rotate to prevent sling twist during a lift. A hydraulic swivel fitting is rated by working pressure and lets a hose or pipe connection rotate to prevent hose twisting on rotating or repositioned equipment — they serve entirely different functions and are not interchangeable despite both allowing rotation.
How do I know what thread size swivel hoist ring I need?
Match the swivel hoist ring's bolt thread exactly to the tapped mounting hole in the load — common sizes range from 1/4-20 up to 1-8 UNC depending on the ring's rated capacity, and the thread must also engage to the ring manufacturer's specified minimum thread engagement depth in the load to achieve the rated WLL.
Can I use a standard eye bolt instead of a swivel hoist ring?
A standard (non-swivel) eye bolt is fixed in orientation and can be side-loaded if the sling angle shifts during a lift, which standard eye bolts aren't rated to handle well. A swivel hoist ring's bail rotates and pivots to stay aligned with the actual line of pull throughout the lift, which is specifically why swivel hoist rings are specified for lifts where the sling angle may change or isn't perfectly vertical.
What pressure rating do I need for a hydraulic swivel fitting?
Match the swivel fitting's rated working pressure to the hydraulic system's maximum operating pressure, not just typical operating pressure, and confirm the thread standard (JIC, NPT, BSP, ORFS, etc.) matches the mating fitting exactly — an underrated or mismatched swivel becomes a failure point even if the rest of the hydraulic circuit is correctly rated and sealed.
