Technical Foundation

What Is a Storage Tank?

A bulk storage tank holds a liquid — water, chemical, fuel, or process fluid — in a fixed vessel sized by gallon capacity, with material and construction chosen for chemical compatibility with the stored contents and the pressure/temperature conditions of service. Polyethylene tanks are common for chemical and water storage due to broad chemical resistance and lower cost, but have specific gravity limits (a tank's rated capacity assumes water-like specific gravity — denser chemicals require a lower fill level or a tank specifically rated for that specific gravity).

Tank orientation and bottom shape affect drainage and application fit — vertical tanks maximize storage in a smaller footprint, horizontal tanks suit lower-clearance installations or transport applications, and cone-bottom tanks allow complete gravity drainage and are preferred for chemicals that settle or need full batch drainage between uses. Steel tanks require internal lining or coating compatibility review for corrosive contents, while fiberglass offers strong chemical resistance for aggressive media not suited to poly or unlined steel.

Applications

Where Storage Tanks Get Used

Storage tanks are specified anywhere a facility needs to hold a bulk volume of liquid, sized and material-matched to the specific stored chemical, fuel, or process fluid.

Water & Wastewater Treatment

Chemical storage tanks holding treatment chemicals dosed into municipal and industrial water systems.

Agricultural Operations

Poly storage tanks for fertilizer, pesticide, and bulk water storage on farms and agricultural facilities.

Chemical Processing & Manufacturing

Fiberglass and lined steel tanks storing corrosive process chemicals in production facilities.

Fuel Storage & Fleet Fueling

Steel horizontal and vertical tanks storing diesel and other fuels for fleet and equipment refueling.

Food & Beverage Processing

Stainless steel and FDA-compliant poly tanks storing potable water and process liquids.

Oil & Gas Field Operations

Cone bottom and vertical tanks storing produced water, chemicals, and process fluids at field sites.

FAQ

Storage Tanks Questions, Answered

How do I choose the right tank material for my stored liquid?

Material compatibility must be checked against the specific chemical, not just its general category — polyethylene resists a broad range of chemicals but isn't universal, some chemicals require fiberglass or a lined/coated steel tank, and stainless steel is often specified for potable water or food-grade applications. Check a chemical compatibility chart for your specific stored liquid, or share the chemical name and ChatMRO can help match a compatible tank.

What does specific gravity rating mean for a poly tank?

A poly tank's rated capacity assumes the stored liquid has roughly the same density as water (specific gravity of 1.0) — denser chemicals weigh more per gallon and put more stress on the tank walls, so tanks are rated for a maximum specific gravity (e.g., 1.5), and denser chemicals either need a tank specifically rated for that density or must be stored at a reduced fill level. Confirm your chemical's specific gravity before selecting a standard tank.

Should I choose a vertical, horizontal, or cone-bottom tank?

Vertical tanks maximize storage capacity in a smaller footprint and suit most fixed installations with adequate ceiling height. Horizontal tanks fit lower-clearance spaces or transport/skid applications. Cone-bottom tanks allow complete gravity drainage of the tank contents, preferred for chemicals that settle out of solution or applications requiring full batch drainage between uses.

What capacity tank do I need?

Size the tank to your required storage volume with margin — accounting for the fact that a tank should not typically be filled to 100% capacity, and that denser chemicals may require a reduced fill level relative to the tank's rated capacity. Share your required storage volume and the stored chemical's specific gravity and ChatMRO can help match an appropriately sized tank.

Do storage tanks need secondary containment?

Many chemical and fuel storage applications are subject to EPA or local regulations requiring secondary containment (a containment basin or double-wall tank) sized to hold the full tank volume in case of a leak or rupture. Check applicable regulations for your specific stored chemical, tank size, and location before finalizing an installation without containment.
