What Is a Steel Wool?
Steel wool is a bundle of fine, flexible low-carbon steel fibers used as an abrasive for surface preparation, polishing, rust and finish removal, and general scouring, offering a conformable abrasive that follows curved and irregular surfaces better than a rigid sanding block or pad. It's graded on a standardized numeric scale from 0000 (finest) through 4 (coarsest), with fiber thickness and coarseness increasing at each step up the scale.
Grade selection depends on the task: 0000 and 000 grades are used for final polishing, wood finish rubbing between coats, and delicate metal polishing where scratching must be minimized, while grades 2 and 3 are used for aggressive rust and paint removal or heavy scouring. Oil-free grades are specified where residual oil would interfere with a subsequent finish or coating, and soap-filled pads combine the abrasive with a built-in cleaning agent for general scouring tasks.

What does the steel wool grade number mean?
The grade number indicates fiber thickness and abrasiveness on a standardized scale from 0000 (finest, least aggressive) up to 4 (coarsest, most aggressive) — a lower number cuts less material and leaves a finer scratch pattern, while a higher number removes material faster but leaves more visible scratching.
What grade of steel wool should I use for wood finishing?
0000 (extra-fine) grade is standard for rubbing out a final finish coat and for polishing between coats of lacquer, varnish, or oil finish, since it smooths the surface without cutting through the finish or leaving visible scratch marks.
Why would I need oil-free steel wool instead of standard grade?
Standard steel wool often carries a light oil coating from manufacturing to prevent rust in storage, which can contaminate a surface that's about to be painted, stained, or plated. Oil-free grades avoid that contamination risk and are specified whenever the treated surface needs to accept a subsequent coating cleanly.
Can steel wool be used on stainless steel without causing rust stains?
Standard carbon steel wool can leave embedded steel particles that later rust and stain a stainless steel surface, so a stainless-specific or non-ferrous abrasive pad is generally recommended instead of standard steel wool for stainless steel finishing work.
What's the difference between plain steel wool pads and soap-filled pads?
Soap-filled pads have a cleaning agent impregnated into the steel wool fibers, combining abrasive scouring with a detergent for general household and industrial cleaning tasks. Plain steel wool pads are just the abrasive fiber, used where a separate cleaner or finish product is being applied by the user.
