What Is a Scoop Shovel?
A scoop shovel has a wide, shallow, upturned-edge blade designed to slide under and lift a large volume of loose, free-flowing material in a single motion, distinguishing it from a digging spade's narrower, flatter blade meant to penetrate compacted ground. Blade material is chosen for the material being moved and the working environment: aluminum is light and corrosion-resistant for grain and general bulk handling, steel offers more durability against abrasive or dense material like gravel, and polyethylene blades resist sticking to wet snow and won't spark or scratch coated surfaces.
Handle configuration affects leverage and control — long straight handles suit two-handed scooping and throwing motion for high-volume work like snow removal or grain handling, while D-handles or short handles give more control in tighter spaces or when working from a stooped position, such as cleaning out a livestock stall or loading a wheelbarrow.

What's the difference between a scoop shovel and a regular digging shovel?

Scoop shovels aren't well suited to breaking ground, and digging spades don't move bulk loose material efficiently.
Should I choose an aluminum, steel, or poly blade scoop shovel?
Aluminum is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, a good general choice for grain and everyday bulk handling. Steel is more durable against abrasive or dense material like gravel and aggregate but heavier and prone to rust without coating. What blade width should I get for grain handling?
