What Is a Nut Assortment?
A nut assortment is a pre-packaged kit — usually a compartmentalized box or bin — containing multiple sizes and sometimes multiple types of nuts, intended to keep a range of common fastener sizes on hand for maintenance and repair work without having to stock and reorder each size separately. Assortments are organized either by a single nut type across many sizes (e.g., hex nuts from #6-32 through 1/2-13) or as mixed kits combining hex nuts, lock nuts and wing nuts across a working size range.
Two things must match the application before an assortment is useful: thread standard (UNC, UNF, or ISO metric — a kit organized around one standard won't help a job specified in another) and material/grade (a general-purpose grade 2 or grade 5 steel assortment isn't a substitute for grade 8 or stainless assortments where higher strength or corrosion resistance is specified). Assortments are a convenience and stocking tool, not a substitute for verifying the exact grade and finish called for on a critical joint.
