What Is a Round Belt?
A round belt is a circular cross-section belt — most commonly polyurethane, sometimes rubber — that runs in a V-groove or round-groove pulley to transmit light-duty rotary power or to drive conveyor rollers from a common line shaft. Compared to a flat or V-belt, a round belt's small cross-section and flexibility let it be routed around tight-radius pulleys and through crossed or offset drive configurations that a wider belt profile couldn't manage, which is why it's the standard choice for gravity and powered roller conveyor line-shaft drives.
Polyurethane round belt is sold either as continuous stock by the foot (cut to length and joined on-site with a hot-welded or mechanically fastened splice) or pre-fabricated as an endless welded loop sized to a specific center distance — field-splicing offers flexibility for odd lengths and quick repairs, while factory-welded endless loops give a stronger, more consistent joint for critical or high-cycle applications. Durometer (hardness) selection affects grip and wear: softer belts grip better on smooth rollers but wear faster, while harder belts last longer but can slip more readily under load.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polyurethane (most common) vs. rubber | Polyurethane offers better abrasion/chemical resistance and is easier to field-splice |
| Diameter | Typically 3mm to 12mm / 1/8 to 1/2 in | Must match the pulley or roller groove size exactly for proper seating and grip |
| Durometer (Hardness) | Typically 80A-92A Shore hardness | Softer belts grip better on smooth rollers; harder belts resist wear better but can slip more |
| Joint Type | Factory-welded endless loop vs. field-spliced | Endless loops give a stronger, more consistent joint; field splicing suits custom lengths and quick repair |
| Surface Texture | Smooth vs. rough-top/grip texture | Rough-top increases friction drive on conveyor rollers handling smooth or lightweight product |

FAQ
Round Belts Questions, Answered
Should I choose a field-spliced or factory-welded endless round belt?
Factory-welded endless loops give a stronger, more consistent joint and are preferred for critical or continuous high-cycle applications where a splice failure would cause downtime. Field-splicing (using a hot-air or ultrasonic welding tool, or a mechanical splice) offers flexibility for custom lengths, quick on-site repairs, and situations where an exact factory size isn't readily available.
What diameter round belt do I need for my conveyor rollers?
Match the belt diameter to the V-groove or round-groove machined into the conveyor roller or pulley — an undersized belt won't seat properly and will slip, while an oversized belt won't fully seat in the groove either. Check the roller manufacturer's specification for the groove's designed belt diameter rather than estimating.
What durometer (hardness) should I choose?
Softer belts (lower Shore A durometer) grip better on smooth-surfaced rollers and pulleys but wear faster under continuous friction; harder belts last longer in service but can be more prone to slipping under higher load or on smoother mating surfaces. Match durometer to your specific load and duty cycle rather than defaulting to one hardness.
Can round belts be used in crossed or offset drive configurations?
Yes — this is one of round belt's key advantages over flat or V-belts. Its circular cross-section and flexibility allow it to run through twisted, crossed, or offset pulley arrangements that a wider flat belt profile can't accommodate without excessive wear or tracking issues.
How do I know when a round belt needs replacing?
Watch for visible surface glazing or cracking, reduced diameter from wear, or slipping/squealing under normal load that wasn't present when new — polyurethane belts also degrade under UV and certain chemical exposure over time, so belts in exposed or harsh environments should be inspected on a routine schedule rather than run to failure.
