What Is a Reservoir Accessorie?
Reservoir accessories are the ancillary fittings mounted on a hydraulic or lubrication oil tank that support fluid condition monitoring and contamination control without being part of the pump or valve circuit itself. A breather cap, typically incorporating a filter element rated to a specific micron size, allows air to enter and exit the tank as fluid level rises and falls without drawing in unfiltered dust and moisture, which is one of the largest contributors to fluid contamination in hydraulic systems that lack a sealed, pressurized reservoir.
Level/temperature gauges give a visual check of fluid volume and running temperature without opening the tank, while suction diffusers spread return-line or pump-suction flow across a wider area to reduce turbulence, foaming and cavitation risk at the pump inlet. Cleanout covers provide bolted access for periodic internal tank inspection and sludge removal, and their gasket material must be compatible with the reservoir fluid to avoid swelling or leaking at the cover seal.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Breather Micron Rating | Filtration rating of the breather element, commonly 3-10 micron | Finer ratings reduce airborne contaminant ingress but increase pressure drop and required breather size |
| Connection Thread/Size | NPT or BSP thread size matching the tank boss | Must match the existing tank fitting to avoid re-machining the reservoir top plate |
| Gauge Type | Direct-reading level/temp combo, magnetic float, sight glass | Combo gauges give both readings from one fitting; sight glasses are simpler but give no temperature data |
| Diffuser Design | Perforated tube or plate spreading return flow | Reduces turbulence and foaming at the fluid surface, which otherwise entrains air into the pump suction |
| Cover Gasket Material | Cork, nitrile, or compressed fiber, fluid-compatible | Must resist swelling/hardening in the specific hydraulic fluid or oil to maintain a leak-free cleanout seal |

FAQ
Reservoir Accessories Questions, Answered
What does a hydraulic tank breather actually do?
As hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir rises and falls with cylinder movement, an equal volume of air must enter or exit the tank. A breather cap houses a filter element that cleans this air as it passes, preventing dust and moisture from being drawn directly into the reservoir — one of the most common contamination entry points in an otherwise well-filtered hydraulic system.
What micron rating should I choose for a breather filter?
Match or exceed the filtration level of the system's inline hydraulic filters — a system running 10 micron pressure-line filtration gains little if its breather lets larger particulate straight into the tank. Common breather ratings range from 3 to 10 micron; finer ratings improve protection but increase airflow resistance, so very fine ratings need a correspondingly larger breather to avoid restricting tank breathing.
Why does my hydraulic reservoir foam or aerate?
Foaming is usually caused by turbulent return-flow entering below or near the fluid surface, air being drawn in through a loose suction line fitting, or a return line positioned too close to the pump suction line inside the tank. A suction diffuser spreading return flow and proper baffle placement between return and suction reduce turbulence and allow entrained air time to escape before reaching the pump inlet.
How often should reservoir cleanout covers be opened for inspection?
This depends on the system's operating environment and filtration quality, but a general guideline is an annual internal inspection for sludge, water, or metallic debris accumulation on the tank bottom, more frequently in dirty or high-duty-cycle applications. Always replace the cleanout gasket when reopening the cover rather than reusing a compressed gasket.
What's the difference between a sight glass and a level/temperature gauge?
A sight glass is a simple clear tube or window showing fluid level only, requiring the operator to be at the tank to read it. A level/temperature gauge combines a magnetic float level indicator with a thermometer in one fitting, giving both fluid volume and running temperature at a glance — useful for catching overheating trends before they cause fluid breakdown.
