What Is a Rolling Ladder?
A rolling ladder is a mobile, self-supporting stairway on locking casters, used for repeated elevated access in warehouses, stock rooms and maintenance areas where a fixed ladder or standard step stool isn't practical. Most designs use a spring-loaded caster mechanism: the casters bear the ladder's weight while it's being rolled, but retract automatically under the user's weight once they step on, so the unit sits flat and stable on its base feet during use.
Ladders are rated by duty class (per ANSI A14.7 for mobile ladder stands) reflecting maximum load capacity — light-duty units for occasional picking, heavy-duty for frequent industrial use. Platform height (not overall height) is the key sizing spec, defining the working height a user stands at; overall height and step count follow from platform height and step rise, which is typically standardized around 10in per step.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Duty Rating | Per ANSI A14.7 — light, medium, heavy, extra-heavy duty | Determines maximum safe load capacity including user and any tools/parts carried |
| Platform Height | Height of the top standing platform above the floor | Primary sizing spec — defines actual working reach, not overall ladder height |
| Caster Mechanism | Spring-loaded retracting, fixed with separate locks | Spring-loaded casters retract under load so the ladder sits flat and stable when in use |
| Material | Steel (painted/galvanized), aluminum | Aluminum reduces weight for frequent repositioning; steel offers higher capacity at lower cost |
| Tread Type | Perforated, serrated, expanded metal | Perforated/serrated treads improve slip resistance and shed debris in industrial settings |

FAQ
Rolling Ladders Questions, Answered
How is a rolling ladder's platform height different from its overall height?
Platform height is the height of the top standing surface above the floor — the actual working height a user stands at. Overall height includes the platform plus any handrails above it, which can add 3ft or more. Always size by platform height against your reach requirement, not overall height.
What does the ANSI A14.7 duty rating mean for a rolling ladder?
ANSI A14.7 governs mobile ladder stands and platforms, and duty rating (light, medium, heavy, extra-heavy) sets the maximum combined weight the ladder is rated to support safely, including the user and anything they're carrying. Choosing a duty rating below actual use weight is a safety violation, not just a capacity shortfall.
How do spring-loaded casters work on a rolling ladder?
The casters support the ladder's own weight when it's being rolled into position, but retract automatically as soon as a user's weight is applied to the steps, lowering the frame onto fixed base feet so it can't roll while someone is on it. This is the standard mechanism specified for OSHA/ANSI-compliant rolling ladders.
Should I choose a steel or aluminum rolling ladder?
Steel rolling ladders generally offer higher load capacity at a lower cost and are common in fixed warehouse locations. Aluminum ladders are lighter and easier to reposition frequently, which matters in operations where the ladder moves between many locations in a shift, though they typically cost more for an equivalent duty rating.
Do rolling ladders need handrails?
Handrails are standard on most rolling ladders above a few steps and are required by ANSI A14.7 for platforms above a certain height threshold. They provide fall protection while standing on the platform and a grip point while climbing, so confirm handrail height and coverage match your facility's safety requirements before purchasing.
