What Is a Pressure Washer Hose?

A pressure washer hose is a reinforced rubber or thermoplastic hose built to carry water at pressures far above standard garden hose ratings — typically 1,500 to 5,000+ PSI — from the pump to the spray gun or wand. Construction uses one or more layers of braided steel wire or high-tensile synthetic yarn reinforcement between an inner tube compatible with the water temperature and an abrasion-resistant outer cover, with the reinforcement layer count generally increasing with pressure rating.

Hot water pressure washer hoses require a different inner tube compound (commonly EPDM or a specialty synthetic rubber) rated for continuous exposure up to 250°F or more, since a cold-water-only hose's inner tube can soften, blister, or fail under sustained hot water or steam service. Connection thread standard (M22, 3/8 in NPT, quick-connect) must match the washer pump outlet and gun, and working length affects both usable reach and pressure drop over distance.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Working Pressure RatingPSI, typically 1500-5000+ with a safety factor over burst pressureMust meet or exceed the washer pump's maximum operating pressure
Temperature RatingCold water (~150°F max) vs. hot water (up to 250°F+)Cold-rated hose inner tube will degrade or fail under hot water/steam service
Inside DiameterCommonly 3/8 in or 1/4 inAffects flow rate (GPM) capacity and pressure drop over hose length
ReinforcementSingle or double braided wire/synthetic yarn layersHigher pressure ratings require additional reinforcement layers
Connection TypeM22 (14mm/15mm), 3/8 in NPT, quick-connectMust match the washer pump outlet and spray gun thread to avoid adapter leaks

FAQ

Pressure Washer Hoses Questions, Answered

How do I know what PSI rating hose I need?

Match or exceed the pressure washer pump's maximum rated operating pressure, not the nozzle tip pressure — check the washer's spec plate or manual. Using a hose rated below the pump's maximum output risks hose failure; a hose rated well above isn't harmful but adds unnecessary cost and stiffness.

Can I use a cold-water hose with a hot water pressure washer?

No — cold-water hoses use an inner tube compound not designed for sustained high-temperature exposure, and running hot water or steam through one can cause the tube to soften, blister, or delaminate from the reinforcement layer, leading to sudden failure. Always use a hose specifically rated for hot water service with a hot water washer.

What does 'non-marking' hose mean and when do I need it?

Non-marking hoses use an outer cover compound that won't leave black rubber scuff marks on light-colored surfaces like concrete, vinyl siding, or vehicle paint when dragged across them. They're standard for commercial washing services and food/beverage facilities where cosmetic marking on floors or surfaces is unacceptable.

Why does hose length affect my washer's pressure and flow?

Every foot of hose adds friction loss, reducing pressure and flow at the nozzle — the effect is more pronounced with smaller inside diameter and higher flow rates. For runs beyond about 50-100 ft, consider a slightly larger inside diameter hose to offset the pressure drop, or confirm the washer pump has enough reserve capacity.

What connection thread do I need — M22 or 3/8 NPT?

M22 (14mm or 15mm) is the most common connection on consumer and prosumer electric and gas pressure washers; 3/8 in NPT is more common on commercial and industrial-duty units. Check both the pump outlet and the spray gun/wand connection, as some units mix thread types and need an adapter.
