What Is a Linear Fluorescent Lamp?
Fluorescent tube designations follow a T-number system where the number indicates the tube's diameter in eighths of an inch — T5 is 5/8 in. diameter, T8 is 1 in. (8/8), and T12 is 1-1/2 in. (12/8). This diameter is directly tied to the ballast the fixture uses, since T5, T8 and T12 lamps require different ballast types and cannot be freely interchanged in the same fixture without also changing the ballast — installing the wrong tube diameter will either not strike or run at incorrect current, shortening lamp life.
Color temperature, measured in Kelvin, describes the visual warmth or coolness of the light: 2700-3000K reads as warm white similar to incandescent lighting, 3500-4100K is a neutral white common in commercial and office spaces, and 5000-6500K is a cool daylight tone often specified for task lighting, retail and industrial spaces where color rendering and visual alertness matter. CRI (Color Rendering Index) alongside color temperature determines how accurately the lamp renders colors compared to natural light.

Can I put a T8 tube in a fixture designed for T12?
Not without changing the ballast — T8 and T12 lamps require different ballasts to strike and run correctly, since they have different electrical characteristics. Many facilities do retrofit T12 fixtures to T8 for energy savings, but that requires replacing the ballast (or the entire fixture) at the same time as the lamps, not just swapping the tube.
What color temperature should I choose for an office?
Most commercial offices use 3500K to 4100K, which reads as a neutral white that's comfortable for extended work without the yellow cast of warm white (2700-3000K) or the stark blue-white of daylight tones (5000K+). Consistency matters more than the exact number — mixing color temperatures across adjacent fixtures is visually noticeable and often flagged as a quality issue.
What's the difference between standard T5 and T5 high output (T5HO)?
Standard T5 lamps run at a lower wattage and lumen output, suited to general ambient lighting, while T5 high output (HO) lamps run at higher current and produce significantly more lumens per lamp, making them common in high-bay warehouse fixtures and horticultural lighting where more light output per fixture is needed. The two require different ballasts and are not interchangeable.
Do I need to match CRI as well as color temperature?
Yes, for applications where color accuracy matters — two lamps at the same color temperature can render colors noticeably differently if their CRI differs. Retail display, print/graphics work, quality inspection and healthcare settings typically specify a minimum CRI (often 80+) in addition to a target color temperature.
Should I switch to LED tubes instead of replacing fluorescent tubes?
LED tube replacements are available in T8 and T5 form factors and can offer lower energy use and longer life, but compatibility depends on the fixture's ballast — some LED tubes work with existing fluorescent ballasts (ballast-compatible), while others require ballast bypass wiring.
