What Is a Plastic Rod Stock?

Plastic rod stock is round bar in engineering thermoplastics, produced by extrusion or casting and machined into bushings, wear pads, guides, rollers and low-friction or chemical-resistant components as a lighter, self-lubricating, or corrosion-immune alternative to metal. Material choice dominates performance: acetal (Delrin) offers high stiffness, low moisture absorption and good dimensional stability for precision machined parts; nylon (cast or extruded, often oil-filled) offers higher impact strength and wear resistance but absorbs moisture, which affects dimensional stability over time.

UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) delivers the best abrasion and impact resistance of common engineering plastics with a very low coefficient of friction, used widely for wear strips and liners, but has lower stiffness and lower maximum service temperature than acetal or nylon. PTFE offers the lowest friction coefficient and best chemical resistance of the group but is soft and creeps (cold-flows) under sustained load, so it's chosen for sealing and low-friction sliding rather than structural or load-bearing parts.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
MaterialAcetal, nylon, UHMW, PTFE, PVC, PEEKEach trades off stiffness, wear resistance, moisture absorption, chemical resistance and max service temperature differently
Diameter ToleranceAs-extruded/cast vs. precision ground rodAs-cast tolerance is looser; precision ground rod holds tighter diameter for direct bushing/bearing use
Moisture AbsorptionNylon absorbs significantly; acetal/UHMW/PTFE absorb minimallyNylon parts can change dimension over time in humid or wet service — a real factor in tight-tolerance applications
Max Continuous Service TempVaries by material, e.g., PTFE and PEEK tolerate the highest heatDetermines suitability near heat sources or in hot process environments
Chemical ResistancePTFE broadest; nylon/acetal more limited against acids/solventsMust be checked against the specific chemical exposure in the application, not assumed generically 'plastic-safe'

Applications

Where Plastic Rod Stock Get Used

Plastic rod stock is specified anywhere a machined part needs to be lighter, self-lubricating, corrosion-immune, or electrically insulating compared to a metal equivalent.

Bushings & Bearings

Machined self-lubricating bushings from acetal, nylon or UHMW replacing metal bearings in low-to-moderate load applications.

Food & Beverage Processing Equipment

Machined guides, wear strips and components in FDA-compliant plastic grades for washdown and food-contact equipment.

Conveyor & Material Handling Components

UHMW and nylon wear strips, guides and rollers in conveyor systems for their low friction and abrasion resistance.

Chemical & Fluid Handling Components

PTFE and PVC machined parts for seals, valve components and fittings requiring broad chemical resistance.

Electrical & Insulating Components

Machined insulators and standoffs from nylon or PTFE for their dielectric properties in electrical equipment.

FAQ

Plastic Rod Stock Questions, Answered

Should I choose acetal or nylon for a precision machined bushing?

Acetal (Delrin) generally holds tighter dimensional tolerance over time because it absorbs far less moisture than nylon, making it the better choice for precision-fit parts. Nylon offers higher impact strength and better wear resistance in some applications, but its dimensional stability can shift as it absorbs ambient moisture, which matters in tight-tolerance bushings or gears.

What makes UHMW different from other engineering plastics?

UHMW has an extremely high molecular weight polyethylene structure that gives it outstanding abrasion resistance and impact strength with a very low coefficient of friction, making it a common choice for wear strips and chute liners — but it has lower stiffness and lower maximum service temperature than acetal or nylon, so it's not the right choice for rigid, load-bearing structural parts.

Why is PTFE not recommended for load-bearing or structural parts?

PTFE has the lowest friction coefficient and among the best chemical resistance of common engineering plastics, but it's relatively soft and prone to creep (cold flow) under sustained mechanical load, gradually deforming rather than holding a fixed dimension — that makes it well suited to seals and low-friction sliding surfaces but a poor choice for structural or precision load-bearing components.

Do I need FDA-compliant plastic rod for food-contact machined parts?

Yes, if the part will directly or indirectly contact food — not all standard grades of a given plastic are FDA-compliant, so specify an FDA/USDA-compliant grade (available in acetal, UHMW, nylon and others) rather than assuming the base material is automatically food-safe.

What tolerance should I expect on as-supplied plastic rod?

As-extruded or as-cast rod typically holds a looser diameter tolerance than metal bar stock and often needs to be turned or ground to final size for precision fits — precision ground rod is available in some materials (notably acetal) for applications needing a tighter as-supplied diameter tolerance.
