What Is a Music Wire?
Music wire is a high-carbon steel wire, specified under ASTM A228, drawn through a series of dies to a precise final diameter and given a patented cold-drawing process that develops very high tensile strength and consistent spring-back behavior without additional heat treatment after forming. It's the default material for small to medium precision springs because of its combination of high strength, good surface finish, and tight diameter tolerance compared to lower grades of spring wire.
Music wire is not a single strength — tensile strength varies with wire diameter under the ASTM A228 specification, with thinner wire achieving higher tensile strength than thicker wire of the same grade, a relationship spring designers account for when calculating spring rate and fatigue life. It is not recommended for elevated-temperature or corrosive-environment service, where oil-tempered wire, chrome silicon, or stainless spring wire are typically specified instead.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Specification | ASTM A228 (high-carbon steel spring wire) | Defines chemistry, tensile strength range by diameter, and surface quality requirements |
| Diameter Range | Typically 0.004 in. to 0.312 in. | Tensile strength varies inversely with diameter under the same grade |
| Tensile Strength | Diameter-dependent, generally 200-400+ ksi | Higher strength at smaller diameters directly affects spring rate and load capacity calculations |
| Temper/Finish | Bright (uncoated) or tinned/coated | Bright finish is standard; coated finishes add corrosion resistance for specific environments |
| Form | Coiled spool or cut straight lengths | Straight lengths suit CNC spring coiling machines and shorter production runs |

FAQ
Music Wire Questions, Answered
What's the difference between music wire and oil-tempered wire?
Music wire is cold-drawn to achieve its strength and spring properties without further heat treatment, giving it excellent surface finish and consistency at smaller diameters. Oil-tempered wire is heat-treated (quenched and tempered) after drawing, generally used for larger-diameter springs where music wire's cold-drawing process becomes less practical, and it has different fatigue and set-resistance characteristics.
Does music wire's tensile strength stay the same across all diameters?
No — under ASTM A228, tensile strength decreases as wire diameter increases, since the cold-drawing process that develops the wire's strength has diminishing effect at larger cross-sections. Spring designers must reference the diameter-specific tensile strength range from the spec, not assume a single flat number across all sizes.
Can music wire be used in corrosive or high-temperature environments?
Not reliably without protective coating — plain music wire has minimal corrosion resistance and can lose temper and spring properties at elevated temperatures. Stainless spring wire is the typical substitute for corrosive environments, and chrome silicon wire is often specified for elevated-temperature or high-stress cyclic applications.
Do I need coiled or straight-length wire for my application?
Coiled spools suit high-volume spring winding on automatic coiling machines and general stock use. Straight lengths are often specified for CNC spring coilers that feed straightened wire, or for applications using the wire directly as a straight component rather than winding it into a spring.
How tight is the diameter tolerance on music wire?
Music wire is drawn to a notably tight diameter tolerance compared to general spring wire grades, which is part of why it's preferred for precision spring work — consistent diameter directly controls consistent spring rate. Exact tolerance varies by diameter and should be confirmed against the specific ASTM A228 class and supplier's mill certification.
