What Is a LED Display Cove Lighting?

Cove lighting is indirect illumination bounced off a ceiling or wall surface from a concealed linear fixture or LED tape run, so fixture selection depends on achieving even light output without visible hot spots between individual LEDs — driven by LED spacing, diffuser lens design and mounting distance from the reflecting surface. Voltage class (commonly 12V or 24V for tape light) affects maximum continuous run length before voltage drop causes visible dimming toward the far end of the run, with 24V systems generally supporting longer continuous runs than 12V for the same wire gauge.

Color temperature and CRI selection follow the same principles as general lighting, but display and retail cove applications often specify higher CRI (90+) to render merchandise colors accurately, and dim-to-warm or tunable white fixtures are increasingly specified to shift color temperature along with dimming level for a more natural, warm-glow dimming curve. Control protocol — from simple 0-10V dimming to DMX or DALI addressable control — is chosen based on how many independent zones need control and whether color-changing (RGB/RGBW) effects are required.

Should I choose 12V or 24V LED tape for a cove installation?

24V systems generally support longer continuous runs before voltage drop causes visible dimming toward the far end of the run, for the same wire gauge, making 24V the more common choice for longer architectural cove runs. 12V remains common for shorter runs and smaller display applications where run length isn't a limiting factor.

How do I avoid visible hot spots or striping in cove lighting?

Hot spots typically result from LED spacing that's too wide relative to the mounting distance from the reflecting surface, or a diffuser lens that doesn't spread light evenly. Higher LED density tape, an appropriate diffuser channel, and enough offset distance from the surface being lit all help produce smooth, even illumination without visible individual LED points.

What CRI should I specify for a retail display?

Retail and merchandise display lighting commonly specifies CRI 90 or higher so that fabric colors, printed graphics and product finishes render accurately to the eye — lower CRI lighting (80 or below) can shift colors enough to be noticeable, particularly with reds and skin tones, which matters for apparel and cosmetics displays specifically.

What's the difference between 0-10V, DALI and DMX control?

0-10V is a simple analog dimming protocol suited to basic on/off and brightness control of white light fixtures. DALI is a digital, addressable protocol allowing individual fixture control and grouping, common in commercial building lighting control systems. DMX is the standard protocol for color-changing (RGB/RGBW) and theatrical/architectural lighting where dynamic scenes and precise color mixing are needed.

Do I need a higher IP-rated fixture for a display case?

It depends on the case environment — a fully enclosed, climate-controlled dry display case can typically use standard IP20 indoor-rated tape light, but any case exposed to condensation, cleaning spray, refrigeration or outdoor conditions needs a higher IP rating (IP65 or above) to prevent moisture ingress from damaging the LEDs or driver.
