What Is a Keyed Shaft?

A keyed shaft is precision ground round stock with a longitudinal keyway — a straight-sided slot machined to a standard width and depth per ANSI B17.1 (inch) or DIN 6885 (metric) — cut along its length so a rectangular key can transmit rotational torque between the shaft and a mounted component like a pulley, sprocket, gear or coupling hub. The key sits half in the shaft's keyway and half in a matching keyway broached into the mating component's bore, and it's the key's shear strength, not friction between the shaft and hub alone, that carries the transmitted torque.

Shaft diameter and keyway width/depth are standardized pairs — a given shaft diameter has one standard keyway size per ANSI/DIN tables, so mating components are designed around that same standard rather than a custom fit. Material selection depends on load and environment: 1018 cold-rolled steel is the common general-purpose choice for moderate loads, while higher-carbon or alloy steels (1045, 4140) are specified for higher torque or fatigue-critical applications, and 300-series stainless is used where corrosion resistance is required.

Applications

Where Keyed Shafts Get Used

Keyed shafts are specified anywhere rotational torque needs a positive, non-slip mechanical connection between a shaft and a mounted component.

Conveyor & Material Handling Systems

Mounting sprockets and pulleys via keyway connections on drive and idler shafts along conveyor lines.

Motor & Gearbox Coupling

Keyed shaft ends on motors and gearboxes providing the standard interface for coupling to driven equipment.

Pump & Blower Drives

Transmitting torque from a motor to an impeller or fan wheel through a keyed shaft connection.

Agricultural Equipment

PTO-driven shafts and augers using keyway connections rated for the shock loads typical of field equipment.

Industrial Machinery Manufacturing

Custom-length precision shafting specified as OEM replacement or new-build components in machine design.

Fans & Blowers

Keyed shaft connections mounting fan wheels to motor or gearbox output shafts in HVAC and process air-handling equipment.

FAQ

Keyed Shafts Questions, Answered

How do I determine the correct keyway size for a given shaft diameter?

Keyway width and depth are standardized to shaft diameter under ANSI B17.1 (inch) or DIN 6885 (metric) — for example, a 1-inch shaft conventionally pairs with a 1/4-inch square keyway. Reference the applicable standard's table by your exact shaft diameter rather than estimating, since an incorrectly sized keyway won't properly seat a standard key.

What material should I choose for a keyed shaft — 1018, 1045, or stainless?

1018 cold-rolled steel is the standard general-purpose choice for moderate torque and non-corrosive environments. 1045 or 4140 alloy steel offers higher strength and fatigue resistance for higher-torque or continuously loaded applications. 300-series stainless is specified when the shaft is exposed to moisture, washdown, or corrosive process environments where carbon steel would rust.

Why does my keyed connection keep loosening or wearing out?

The most common causes are an undersized or worn key allowing play under cyclic load, a keyway that's slightly oversized from wear or poor machining tolerance, or torque loads exceeding what the key's shear strength was designed for. Replacing a worn key is usually far cheaper than replacing the shaft, so inspect key fit before assuming the shaft itself has failed.

Can I cut a custom keyway into shaft stock myself, or should I order it pre-keyed?

A keyway can be broached or milled into plain round stock, but achieving the correct width tolerance and a straight, properly centered slot requires a keyway broach or a mill with the right setup — a hand-cut keyway is prone to being out of tolerance, which then affects key fit. For production quantities or critical tolerances, ordering precision ground shafting with the keyway already cut to spec is generally more reliable and often more economical.

What's the difference between a keyway and a keyseat?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but technically a keyseat is the slot machined into the shaft itself, while a keyway more broadly refers to the complete slot assembly including the matching slot in the mating hub/component. In everyday sourcing conversations, both terms are generally understood to mean the shaft's slot.
