What Is a Hydraulic Manifold Valve?
A hydraulic manifold valve is a compact valve element — either a threaded cartridge that screws into a machined cavity in a manifold block, or a sandwich (modular) plate valve stacked between other components — used to build pressure, flow and directional control functions directly into a manifold rather than plumbing separate valves with external hoses. This reduces leak points, external plumbing, and overall circuit footprint versus a traditional pipe-and-fitting layout.
Cartridge valves are sized to standard industry cavity dimensions (such as the T-2A, T-3A and similar SAE/industry cavity families), so the cartridge and the manifold's machined cavity must match exactly — a relief valve cartridge from one cavity family will not seal or function correctly in a differently sized cavity even at a similar port size. Sandwich plate valves are sized by their mounting pattern (commonly D03, D05 NFPA/ISO patterns) to stack between a directional valve and the manifold surface.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Valve Type | Cartridge (screw-in) vs. sandwich/modular plate | Cartridges integrate into a machined cavity; plates stack between other stack valves |
| Cavity/Pattern Size | Industry-standard cavity families (e.g., T-2A) or NFPA/ISO stack patterns (D03, D05) | Cartridge and cavity, or plate and stack pattern, must match exactly to seal and function |
| Valve Function | Relief, check, flow control, logic element (2-way cartridge) | Determines the control behavior built into the manifold circuit |
| Pressure Rating | Typically rated to 3000-5000+ psi | Must meet or exceed system operating and surge pressure |
| Adjustment Type | Fixed, screw-adjustable, or pilot-operated | Adjustable versions allow field tuning of relief/flow setpoints without swapping the cartridge |

FAQ
Hydraulic Manifold Valves Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a cartridge valve and a sandwich plate valve?
A cartridge valve is a self-contained, threaded valve element that screws directly into a machined cavity in a manifold block — the cavity itself provides the porting. A sandwich (modular) plate valve is a flat, ported plate that's bolted between a directional control valve and the manifold surface, adding its function (such as a check or flow control) into the stack without needing a separate cavity to be machined.
Why does the cavity size matter so much for cartridge valves?
Industry-standard cavity families define exact internal dimensions, seal locations and porting for a cartridge to seat and function correctly — a cartridge sized for one cavity family will not seal properly, and may not even thread in fully, if installed in a differently dimensioned cavity, even if the nominal port size looks similar. Always match the cartridge's cavity designation to the cavity actually machined into your manifold block.
What is a logic element (2-way cartridge) valve used for?
A logic element cartridge is a 2-way, pilot-operated valve that acts as a large-orifice check or directional control element, commonly used where high flow needs to be switched with minimal pressure drop — such as in press circuits and large mobile equipment. Its pilot control line, run separately, determines when the main poppet opens or closes, letting a small pilot signal control a much larger flow path.
Can I adjust a relief valve cartridge's pressure setting in the field?
Only if it's an adjustable-type cartridge (typically with a screw or knob adjustment under a tamper-resistant cap) — fixed-setting cartridges are factory-set and require replacement with a different cartridge to change the relief pressure. Confirm whether your application needs field adjustability before specifying, since adjustable cartridges cost more than fixed equivalents.
How do sandwich plate stack patterns like D03 and D05 affect valve selection?
D03 and D05 (along with other NFPA/ISO designations) define the bolt pattern, port locations and approximate flow capacity for stacked directional and sandwich valves — a larger pattern like D05 generally handles higher flow than D03. The sandwich plate's pattern must match both the directional valve above it and the manifold surface below it in the stack for the ports to align correctly.
