What Is a Hydraulic Hose Fitting?

Hydraulic hose fittings terminate a hose end to connect it to a pump, cylinder, valve or another hose, and must match both the hose's construction (ID, reinforcement layers, and outer cover) and the port thread standard on the mating component. Crimp-style fittings are permanently swaged onto the hose using a crimping machine set to the fitting manufacturer's specified die and crimp diameter, forming a one-time, non-serviceable but highly reliable high-pressure connection — the dominant method for shop-fabricated hose assemblies.

Thread and seal standards are not interchangeable even at matching nominal sizes: JIC 37° flare uses a 37-degree metal-to-metal cone seal, ORFS (O-ring face seal) uses a flat face with a captured O-ring for a leak-free seal that also tolerates re-torquing better than JIC, NPT/BSPT use tapered pipe threads sealing on thread interference, and SAE flange fittings (Code 61/62) are used for larger-diameter, higher-pressure connections where a threaded fitting would be impractically large. Mixing standards requires a purpose-made adapter, never forcing dissimilar threads together.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Thread/Seal StandardJIC 37°, ORFS, NPT/BSPT, SAE flangeEach standard has a different seal geometry — mismatched standards will not seal even if threads superficially engage
Hose Size (Dash Size)e.g. -06, -08, -12 (16ths of an inch ID)Fitting must match hose ID/dash size exactly for the crimp specification to be valid
Pressure RatingWorking pressure matched to hose and system, e.g. 3000-6000 PSIFitting pressure rating must meet or exceed system operating and surge pressure, not just steady-state pressure
Attachment MethodCrimp (permanent) vs. field-attachable (reusable)Crimp fittings need a crimping machine and correct die; field-attachable fittings can be installed with hand tools in the field
Material/PlatingCarbon steel (zinc/chromate plated), stainless steelPlating and material must suit the operating environment's corrosion exposure

Applications

Where Hydraulic Hose Fittings Get Used

Hydraulic hose fittings are needed wherever a hose assembly connects to a pump, cylinder, valve or another hose in a hydraulic circuit.

Mobile & Off-Highway Equipment

Crimped hose assemblies with JIC and ORFS fittings connecting cylinders, motors and valves on construction and agricultural machinery.

Industrial Hydraulic Power Units

SAE flange and NPT fittings connecting fixed hydraulic power unit piping to system components.

Field Service & Emergency Hose Repair

Field-attachable fittings allowing a hydraulic hose to be repaired or replaced on-site without a shop crimping machine.

Manufacturing & Press Equipment

High-pressure crimp fittings rated to system peak pressure on press and stamping equipment hydraulic circuits.

Marine & Offshore Hydraulics

Stainless steel fittings resisting saltwater corrosion on deck machinery and steering hydraulic systems.

Agricultural Equipment Hydraulics

ORFS and JIC fittings on implement hydraulics where reusable, leak-tight connections simplify field maintenance.

FAQ

Hydraulic Hose Fittings Questions, Answered

What's the difference between JIC and ORFS fittings?

JIC (37° flare) fittings seal metal-to-metal on a 37-degree cone, which is reliable but can develop small leaks if over-torqued, under-torqued, or repeatedly disconnected and reconnected. ORFS (O-ring face seal) fittings seal on a flat face using a captured O-ring, giving a more consistently leak-free connection that tolerates re-torquing and vibration better — ORFS is increasingly preferred for high-pressure and leak-sensitive circuits, though JIC remains extremely common and the two are not interchangeable without an adapter.

Can I use a field-attachable fitting instead of a crimped one?

Yes, for many hose and pressure combinations — field-attachable (reusable) fittings screw or clamp onto the hose without a crimping machine, useful for field repairs or low-volume assembly, but they're generally rated for somewhat lower working pressure than an equivalent crimped fitting and take more time to install correctly. High-pressure, high-volume production hose assembly is still dominated by crimp fittings for cost and reliability at scale.

How do I know what dash size hose fitting I need?

Dash size denotes the hose's nominal inside diameter in 16ths of an inch — a -08 hose has a 1/2 inch ID, a -12 has a 3/4 inch ID — and the fitting must be manufactured for that exact dash size and the specific hose's reinforcement construction, since crimp specifications (crimp diameter) are unique to a matched hose-and-fitting combination from a given manufacturer.

Why won't my NPT fitting seal against an ORFS or JIC port?

NPT is a tapered thread that seals on thread interference (often with thread sealant or tape), while JIC and ORFS are straight-thread fittings that seal via a separate cone or O-ring seal feature — the sealing mechanisms are fundamentally different, so a fitting from one standard cannot be threaded into a port designed for another without a purpose-made adapter that transitions between the two seal types.

What pressure rating should I specify for a hydraulic hose fitting?

Select a fitting (and hose) rated at or above the system's maximum operating pressure, including pressure spikes from cylinder shock loading or valve shifting, not just the nominal steady-state pressure — most hydraulic systems see transient pressure spikes well above steady operating pressure, and undersizing the fitting's rating relative to those spikes is a common cause of premature fitting failure.
